Usher Position at Metro
Metro is dedicated to shaping a better future for the greater Portland region. The work the people of Metro do every day benefits the lives of the people who live here, today, and tomorrow.
Home to arts organizations such as Oregon Ballet Theatre, the Oregon Symphony and the Portland Opera, P'5 is among the largest performing arts centers in the US with approximately 800 performances annually. The five theatres at Portland'5 have showcased countless events over the years including Broadway shows, concerts, comedy shows, plays, children's theatre, lectures, dance and much more. We are purposeful in presenting our diverse community with meaningful performing arts performances and spaces that are welcoming and accessible to everyone.
We're seeking enthusiastic and service-oriented individuals to join our team as Ushers. This role is ideal for people who enjoy interacting with the public, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and are looking for flexible, event-based work. With shifts typically lasting about four hours and occurring primarily in the evenings and weekends, this position offers a great opportunity to earn income while maintaining other work, school, or personal commitments.
As an Usher, you'll play a key role in creating a welcoming, safe, and enjoyable experience for every guest. You'll greet patrons, assist with seating and wayfinding, answer questions, and help guests feel comfortable and informed throughout their visit. Along the way, you'll build expertise in our venues, develop customer service and communication skills, and contribute to the success of world-class performances enjoyed by our diverse community.
If you're passionate about helping others, enjoy live events, and want to be part of an organization dedicated to making the performing arts accessible and welcoming to all, we encourage you to apply.
As an Usher you will:
- Welcome patrons and provide directions, wayfinding assistance, and seating support.
- Assist with ticketing and seating concerns, resolving routine issues and referring complex situations to the Lead or House Manager.
- Scan or collect tickets as assigned, including at the Newmark Theatre.
- Help maintain clear and accessible walkways, aisles, and ramps by addressing obstructions such as wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, and large packages.
- Enforce facility, client, and restricted-item policies in a professional and customer-focused manner.
- Identify spills, safety concerns, and other potential hazards, promptly reporting them to the Lead or House Manager.
- Respond appropriately to accidents and emergencies by following established emergency procedures and seeking assistance when needed.
- Remain attentive throughout events to provide exceptional customer service and support a safe, welcoming environment for all guests.
- Distribute programs, flyers, and other materials as requested and provide guest attendance counts to the Lead or House Manager.
- Communicate availability to the Admissions Staffing Manager to support monthly scheduling needs.
Attributes for success:
- Perform the physical aspects of the position, including the ability to stand for long periods of time, ability to climb ramps and stairs, and the ability to lift, hold and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Read and comprehend all information listed on tickets, vouchers, badges, and other event credentials.
- Communicate clearly, concisely and in a courteous manner both orally and in written form.
- Remain attentive to, and approachable by, members of the public and clients.
- Work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
- Deal effectively and successfully with stressful and sometimes difficult social interactions.
- Represent the venue in a professional, competent, and courteous manner.
- Grasp procedural techniques and facility policies and regulations, as well as the facility's physical layout.
- Use computerized systems online via the Internet for event information and scheduling.
- Must be dependable.
