UM01 University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) University Police Officer II (Laterals or Retirees) University of Maryland College Park Mar 24, 2026 $70K - $75K Job Description Summary The University of Maryland Department of Public Safety (UMPD) is a full‑service, legislated police agency that serves students, faculty, staff, and visitors within its jurisdiction. UMPD is recruiting candidates for the position of University Police Officer II. Applicants must have a non‑provisional police officer certification through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission, or comparable police certification through another state, must have successfully completed a Police Field Training Program and a probationary period with a police agency. UMPD seeks dynamic individuals who exhibit good character, sound judgment, honesty, reliability and integrity combined with excellent communication skills. Responsibilities Police Officers patrol designated areas by vehicle and foot; respond to calls for assistance and emergencies; apprehend, detain, process, and arrest individuals who violate Maryland Vehicle and Criminal laws; interact with and establish rapport with the campus community; testify in court cases as necessary; and work rotating shifts. Officers may be called back to duty in emergency situations and are required to work weekends, nights, and holidays as needed by the department. Physical Demands Maintain physical condition to successfully accomplish all assignments without jeopardizing personal or community well‑being. Must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, nights, and holidays as needed. Officers may be called back to duty during emergencies. Licenses / Certifications Satisfactory completion of a Maryland Police Training Commission recognized or approved Police Academy training program. Successful completion of a Police Field Training program. Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission. Valid Maryland non‑commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license. Additional Qualifications Be 21 years of age upon graduation from the Police Academy. Citizen of the United States. Meet various physical requirements; have vision correctable to 20/20 in each eye. Must not have been convicted of a felony. Participate in Physical Agility Test, Oral Interview, Truth Verification Examination (Polygraph), Drug Screening, Physical and Psychological Examination (after conditional offer of employment), and complete background investigation. Minimum Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or GED. Experience: Satisfactory completion of a Maryland Police Training Commission recognized or approved Police Academy training program and successful completion of a Police Field Training program. Other: Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission and valid Maryland non‑commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license. Required Knowledge / Skills / Abilities General knowledge of citizens’ rights and responsibilities, federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; skill in detecting situations imperiling public safety; operating emergency vehicles under all conditions; caring and use of firearms, self‑defense tools and criminal detection devices; effective communication orally and in writing; operating two‑way radios and telephones in various environments; applying knowledge to make prompt decisions for routine and critical situations; sensitivity in interaction with a diverse population; maintaining composure and demonstrating restraint in stressful and dangerous situations; performing extensive sitting, driving, standing, walking, climbing, and running; lifting, dragging, and carrying heavy objects; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; following oral and written directions; providing guidance and training to others; responding to emergency situations requiring physical stamina and force; entering and exiting vehicles frequently and quickly; wearing personal protective equipment; conducting preliminary and follow‑up investigations.
