Registered Nurse RN Lactation Consultant

Position Summary As a Lactation Consultant RN at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, you will round on patients in Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and the NICU to provide breastfeeding support and education to patients and staff. You will develop feeding plans, collaborate with pediatricians and speech therapists, and serve as a subject‑matter expert in lactation. Shift Details Full‑time evening shift: 2:00PM – 12:00AM. 18% night shift differential and $3 per hour weekend shift differential. Shift scheduling is self‑managed through the hospital’s scheduling tool. Core Functions Assess patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs; review histories and physicals; complete assessments and reassessments per policy. Provide care and collaborate with patients, families, and staff to formulate individualized lactation plans of care, education, and interventions. Deliver continuing education programs related to lactation; suggest updates to educational materials based on needs assessment and advances in theory and technology. Formulate and initiate a plan of care, including discharge planning, utilizing assessment data and input from patients, families, and the health team. Implement the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of the healthcare team; provide care based on physician orders and nursing plans. Evaluate patient and family response to care and teaching; revise the plan as needed; evaluate progress toward goals and expected outcomes. Document assessments, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record. Provide care based on the best evidence available; participate in research activities within clinical practice; engage in unit or facility leadership and orientation of staff, patients, and visitors. Interact with all levels of staff and external contacts to support patient health, including clergy for spiritual support and community providers for broader care coordination. Minimum Qualifications Current RN licensure in the state of practice. IBCLC, CLC, CBC, or CBS certification required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification must be obtained within six months of hire. Must maintain clinical performance competencies; experience, training, and education needed to perform the job must be demonstrated throughout the interview process. Pool/per diem positions require a minimum of one year of lactation consultant experience in a WIC or similar setting. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. One year of experience in an inpatient WIC environment preferred. Additional related education or experience preferred.
