The Vice President, Medical Affairs – North America (NA) reports directly to the SVP, Global Medical Affairs (GMA) and is accountable for leading the North America Medical Affairs organization, ensuring the development and execution of integrated medical strategies that support the successful commercialization and lifecycle management of the company's portfolio across the United States and Canada. This leader provides strategic direction and oversight for all regional Medical Affairs functions, including Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs), Medical Directors, Field Medical Directors, and other medical capabilities, while ensuring alignment with Global Medical Affairs priorities. The Vice President will build, develop, and lead a high-performing Medical Affairs organization that delivers scientific excellence, strengthens external stakeholder engagement, advances evidence generation, and provides strategic medical leadership across the product lifecycle. This role partners closely with Global Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Commercial, Regulatory, Market Access, Patient Advocacy, and other cross-functional teams to ensure medical insights inform strategic decision-making and regional execution. As a key member of the Global Medical Affairs Leadership Team, the Vice President will champion a patient-centric, compliant, and data-driven Medical Affairs organization while fostering innovation, operational excellence, and a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute the North America Medical Affairs strategy aligned with Global Medical Affairs objectives and corporate priorities.
- Lead the regional Medical Affairs organization, ensuring excellence across scientific exchange, medical strategy, evidence generation, and stakeholder engagement.
- Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership regarding regional medical insights, scientific trends, healthcare landscape changes, and emerging opportunities.
- Ensure alignment of regional medical strategies with global product strategies throughout development, launch, commercialization, and lifecycle management.
- Drive regional execution of Medical Affairs priorities while maintaining consistency with global standards and governance.
Medical Strategy & Scientific Leadership
- Provide medical leadership for product launches, lifecycle management, and evidence generation initiatives within North America.
- Ensure development and execution of integrated medical plans that address unmet medical needs and support patient outcomes.
- Oversee regional medical input into clinical development, health economics, real-world evidence, investigator-initiated research, and publication strategies.
- Ensure scientific integrity, medical accuracy, and compliance across all Medical Affairs activities.
- Monitor emerging scientific data, competitive landscape, treatment guidelines, and healthcare trends to inform strategic decisions.
- Represent Medical Affairs on regional and global governance committees and cross functional leadership forums.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner closely with Commercial, Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, Pharmacovigilance, Legal, Compliance, and other functions to ensure coordinated execution of business objectives.
- Collaborate with Global Medical Affairs to adapt global strategies for regional implementation while providing regional insights to inform global decision-making.
- Serve as the medical voice in cross-functional planning and execution activities supporting product launches and lifecycle management.
- Ensure alignment between regional medical priorities and broader organizational strategies.
External Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), academic institutions, professional societies, patient advocacy organizations, healthcare systems, and other external stakeholders.
- Provide executive sponsorship for strategic scientific partnerships and collaborative research initiatives.
- Represent the company at major scientific congresses, advisory boards, and industry forums.
- Ensure Medical Affairs serves as a trusted scientific partner to healthcare professionals and the broader medical community.
Organizational Leadership
- Build, develop, and retain a high-performing Medical Affairs organization across North America.
- Establish organizational priorities, performance expectations, succession planning, and talent development initiatives.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, inclusion, and continuous learning.
- Lead organizational transformation initiatives that improve Medical Affairs effectiveness and scalability.
- Ensure efficient allocation of resources and achievement of departmental objectives.
Operational Excellence
- Oversee Medical Affairs budget planning, forecasting, and resource management for the North America organization.
- Establish performance metrics and dashboards to monitor organizational effectiveness and business outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, company policies, and industry standards.
- Drive operational efficiencies through standardized processes, governance, and technology-enabled solutions.
Communication
- Communicate Medical Affairs strategy, priorities, and performance effectively across executive leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Deliver clear and compelling presentations to senior leadership, governance committees, and external scientific audiences.
- Translate complex scientific and medical information into actionable business insights.
- Foster transparent communication and collaboration across regional and global Medical Affairs teams.
- Influence decision-making across multiple organizational levels while maintaining strong stakeholder relationships.
Teamwork/Collaboration
- Partner effectively with Global Medical Affairs leadership to ensure consistency of medical strategy and execution.
- Collaborate across functional and regional teams to optimize organizational performance and patient impact.
- Build trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Lead and inspire diverse, matrixed teams in a highly collaborative environment.
- Promote knowledge sharing, innovation, and continuous organizational learning.
- Support a culture focused on scientific excellence, patient-centered decision-making, and operational execution.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Executive leadership responsibility for multiple Medical Affairs functions and senior leaders across North America.
Qualifications:
- MD, PharmD, PhD, or other advanced scientific degree preferred.
- 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, including 10+ years in Medical Affairs leadership.
- Demonstrated success leading regional or global Medical Affairs organizations and developing strategies across product launches, commercialization, and lifecycle management.
- Strong knowledge of Medical Affairs, drug development, regulatory requirements, healthcare systems, compliance, and external stakeholder engagement.
- Proven ability to build and lead high-performing, geographically dispersed teams within complex, matrixed global organizations.
- Exceptional strategic thinking, executive leadership, financial acumen, communication, and influencing skills.
- Oncology experience is strongly preferred.
