Road Maintenance Worker

Description Under direct supervision, assists in maintaining county roads and their right of way by performing a variety of manual tasks. Work assignments will vary depending upon the season and projects assigned. Distinguishing Characteristics The Road Maintenance Worker is the entry or trainee level class for incumbents. Employees in this classification often work as part of a crew, are under direct supervision, and are gaining the skills needed to operate equipment and perform road maintenance responsibilities. The Road Maintenance Worker II incumbents perform road construction work and operate equipment independently under general supervision. The Lead Road Maintenance Worker provides directions to a crew(s) and acts as a job or project leader for staff and independently operates a variety of equipment. Supervision Exercised And Received Under Immediate Supervision - Incumbents at this level are closely supervised in essentially all aspects of their assigned work except for routine and basic tasks. Work methods are generally prescribed in specific terms. They usually follow an established routine with general assignments, and their work is subject to frequent reviews. A position may involve repetition of a limited number of tasks that after initial training and review warrant only occasional supervisory re-review. This type of direction is normally reserved for entry and trainee level positions. Examples of Duties Repairs and patches surfaces by hand sweeping, raking and shoveling; loads and unloads gravel, chips, and asphalt. Fabricates and prepares cement forms; cuts, repairs or removes broken or damaged sidewalks, curbs and gutters. Installs and maintains traffic control devices; paints traffic lines; erects, repairs and removes signs. Performs regular storm drain maintenance and emergency storm work. Spray and remove weeds and old vegetation from around places such as roadways, buildings, ditches, ponds, fences and sidewalks. Performs emergency storm/disaster work. Operates light duty snowplow for snow removal. Transports and operates striping equipment. Operates light equipment on routine assignments including, but not limited to asphalt rollers, sweepers, mowers and concrete/asphalt saws. Performs daily preventative maintenance such as greasing and checking fluids. Drives a variety of light duty trucks. Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to activities. Subject to emergency call-out response and standby assignment. Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment; secures worksites from safety hazards as necessary; attends safety meetings. Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public. Typical Qualifications Knowledge Of Basic computer operation. Road construction materials, tools and equipment. Methods employed in basic laboring and maintenance work. Safety precautions that are used in hazardous construction work. Skill To Use tools, equipment, and supplies in a safe and efficient manner. Measure and calculate angles, lengths, and volumes. Complete and maintain accurate records. Ability To Effectively organize and manage time. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers. Contribute effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervision and those encountered in the course of the work Required Certifications And Licenses Possession of a valid driver’s license. OSHA 10-Hour Construction Training certification within 15 days of the date of employment in accordance with NRS 618.983(1). Experience And Training Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent. Retirement Nevada Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) (1) Humboldt County, Nevada contributes 36.75% of an eligible Regular Member's salary for retirement. Insurance Coverage Insurance Stipend Humboldt County, Nevada provides a monthly insurance stipend to assist employees who elect to participate in any of the County offered insurance plans. The stipend for Fiscal Year 2026-2027 is $1,300.00 per month for Employee only, Employee and Spouse, and Employee and Child(ren) Health Plan Options and $2,000.00 per month for the Employee and Family Health Plan Option listed below. Health Insurance Eligibility Employees working 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health insurance coverage. Eligible employees as defined in the group health insurance plan are eligible to enroll in the group health insurance plan effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment. Dependents of employees, as defined in the current plan booklet, are also eligible for coverage under the insurance plan at the employee's expense. Employees must authorize a payroll deduction for the share of the health coverage premium to be paid by the employee. Health Plan Options (Administered by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield) Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Monthly coverage costs are: Employee only: $1,013.29. Employee and Spouse: $2,229.26. Employee and Child/Children: $1,823.95. Employee and Family: $3,141.24. The calendar year deductibles for this plan are: Individual In Network: $1,000.00. Individual Out of Network: $2,000.00. Family In Network: $2,000.00. Family Out of Network: $4,000.00. After deductible has been met, a coinsurance (2) of the following will be applied: In Network: 20%. Out of Network: 50%. High-Deductible Plan with HSA Monthly coverage costs are: Employee only: $849.69. Employee and Spouse: $1,869.31. Employee and Child/Children: $1,529.44. Employee and Family: $2,634.06. The calendar year deductibles for this plan are: Individual In Network: $3,400.00, Individual Out of Network: $3,400.00. Family In Network: $6,800.00. Family Out of Network: $6,800.00. After deductible has been met, a coinsurance of the following will be applied: In Network: 0%. Out of Network: 30%. Employee and Child/Children: $16.51. Employee and Family: $26.39. The In-Network Copay is: $10 for an Eye Exam every 12 months. $25 Material Copay - frames, lenses and contacts. Frames (every 12 months). $130 allowance for frames. 20% savings on the amount over your allowance. Lenses (every 12 months). Covered in full after Materials Copay. Contacts (instead of glasses) every 12 months. $130 allowance for elective contacts. Contact lens exam (fitting and evaluation). $210 allowance for medically necessary contact lenses. Lenticular Lenses - $100 Allowance. Contacts (including Elective and Necessary): $105 Allowance. Leave Plans Annual Leave All full-time employees will earn annual leave beginning from their initial date of hire at a rate of .0385 hours earned per hour's paid (3). Part-time employees who regularly work 20 hours or more per week will earn annual leave on a pro-rated basis. Employees earn additional annual leave hours at 3, 6, 11, 16, 21 and 25 years of service up to a maximum of 200 hours per year. While on probationary period, an employee cannot take annual leave for the first six months; the employee still accrues vacation leave during this time. Sick Leave Eligible Humboldt County, Nevada employees accrue sick leave at the rate of .05 hours for each hour worked up to a maximum accrual of 120 hours per year with a maximum accrual of 980 hours. Holiday Leave Eligible Humboldt County, Nevada employees enjoy 12 paid holidays per year plus one additional day as a floating holiday (4). Holidays eligible for paid holiday leave include: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Nevada Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Family Day (Friday after Thanksgiving), and Christmas Day. Tuition Reimbursement Humboldt County, Nevada values its employees and empowers them to enhance their skills by taking career related higher education courses as well as participating in job related workshops and seminars. To that end, the County has a generous Tuition Reimbursement policy for accredited courses, reimbursing up to $4,500 per year (5) in educational expenses. Note Humboldt County, Nevada provides benefits to regular employees. Most part-time positions are ineligible for benefits. 1: PERS retirement benefits are only available to employees hired in positions that work 20 hours per week or more on a regular basis. Positions of less than 20 hours per week (or less than 1040 hours in a fiscal year) will instead participate in Social Security. 2: Coinsurance is the percentage of costs paid by employees after they have paid/met their respective deductibles. 3: Employees will accrue annual leave during their introductory period but are not allowed to use annual leave until you they have been employed continuously for at least 6 months. 4: Employees are eligible to receive the additional floating holiday after successful completion of one (1) year of service with the County. 5: Restrictions apply.
