Job Title: Maintenance Engineer Job Description

This role focuses on operating and maintaining landfill gas collection systems to ensure they perform safely, efficiently, and in compliance with environmental standards. You will inspect and service wells and pumps, perform hands-on mechanical maintenance using hand and power tools, and document all activities and findings using a company-provided laptop. The position combines outdoor fieldwork in a landfill environment with technology-based data entry and reporting responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain the landfill gas collection system to meet established performance standards through timely, cost-effective operations and maintenance activities.
  • Perform monthly monitoring of the wellfield, including measuring liquid levels in gas extraction wells and monitoring perimeter probes for surface emissions.
  • Conduct routine maintenance on system components, including cleaning and maintaining pneumatic pumps, performing HDPE pipe welding, and supporting blower and flare operations.
  • Maintain and service the condensate management system to ensure reliable and safe operation.
  • Use hand and power tools to inspect, repair, and maintain wells, pumps, and associated equipment.
  • Document field observations, maintenance activities, and test results using a laptop and appropriate software tools.
  • Report field conditions, monitoring results, and maintenance findings to the supervisor and, when required, to the client.
  • Participate in regular Health and Safety meetings and follow all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain accurate operating records, logs, and documentation in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with operations and maintenance support at other landfill locations within Indiana as needed, using a company vehicle to travel between sites.
Essential Skills
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn and perform mechanical maintenance on pumps, pipes, and related equipment.
  • Experience working outdoors in varying weather conditions and comfort performing physical work outside for extended periods.
  • Construction or similar field experience that demonstrates familiarity with working on uneven terrain and in rugged environments.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively for maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Basic technology skills and comfort using a computer or laptop for data entry, documentation, and reporting.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office or similar software for recording and organizing data.
  • Ability to perform inspections and basic environmental monitoring tasks in a landfill setting.
  • Capability to walk on uneven terrain and inclines/declines and work outdoors for 8 or more hours.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • No formal certificates or specific education requirements for this position.
  • Exposure to environmental, maintenance, or landfill operations is beneficial.
  • Experience with HDPE pipe welding, pneumatic pumps, or blower/flare systems is a plus.
  • Comfort working in environments with strong odors, such as sulfur-like landfill smells.
  • Willingness to assist at multiple locations within Indiana as operational needs arise.
  • Strong attention to detail in documenting field data and maintenance activities.
  • Commitment to following Health and Safety standards and participating in safety meetings.
Why Work Here?

You will receive a comprehensive set of tools and resources to perform your work effectively, including a take-home company vehicle, gas card, cell phone, laptop, and company uniforms. The organization offers competitive pay for the area and supports you with protective equipment, including a boot voucher to help you get started. You will work in a stable, essential industry with consistent hours, while gaining hands-on experience in environmental and infrastructure operations.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, onsite role at a 24/7 landfill operation, primarily on a 1st shift schedule, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Weekend work or additional hours may be required based on operational needs, so flexibility is important. The work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, with exposure to the elements and to typical landfill odors, including sulfur-like smells. You will frequently walk on uneven terrain and inclines/declines and must be comfortable working outdoors for 8 or more hours per day. A company vehicle is available to use for shelter, warming, or cooling as needed during the shift, and for travel to other landfill locations in Indiana when assistance is required.
