Chemistry Clinical Lab Scientist Supervisor

Job Function Summary Job Function Summary: Supervises employees in highly technical sub‑specialty area. Directly oversees all the technical operations of the laboratory, enforcing standard operating procedures and research methods. Responsible for laboratory meeting quality assurance standards. Involves testing on clinical specimens for information about the patient’s health, for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Disciplines include chemistry, blood banking, hematology, microbiology, immunology, cytology, histology, pathology and cytogenetics. May include highly technical sub‑specialty areas such as enzyme assay, steroid assay, radioimmunoassay, toxicology, electrophoresis, rheumatology, tissue typing, and virology. Key Responsibilities Supervise the technical work productivity and accuracy of the department section by maintaining equipment in operational status, minimizing downtime, overseeing troubleshooting and repair of instrumentation, monitoring maintenance schedules, determining need for backup methods during instrumentation downtime, reviewing and maintaining quality control, assisting senior supervisor in overseeing contracts and ordering reagents and controls, ensuring manual workload is recorded, following computer crash procedures, acting as first consultant for technical problems, notifying residents and medical directors of unusual problems, ensuring laboratory surveys such as CAP are completed, reviewing clinical lab scientists work, completing incident reports, developing competency assessment materials. Oversee training of CLS, HLT and CLS trainees in the department, establish training schedule with the senior supervisor, prepare outlines or checklists of subject matter, review training checklists for completion, accumulate and employ suitable teaching materials. Oversee new test validation and procedures, updating existing test procedures, ensuring procedures are updated and documented consistently, ensuring staff have reviewed procedures and signed off in Master Control, developing new test procedures, assisting with preparing evaluation reports for lab director approval, coordinating go‑live dates with vendor, LIS and clinicians, ensuring staff are trained prior to go‑live, performing IT and interface testing and validation of data entry and result transmission. Oversee compliance in the department, reviewing maintenance and temperature charts, maintaining equipment and maintenance records, ensuring competency assessments are performed annually, ensuring proficiency testing samples are completed and submitted by the deadline. Administrative duties: schedule staff to cover workload, organize special projects and tests, designate days for batch testing, perform performance evaluations with senior supervisor at least once a year, update and approve staff timesheets, minimize errors, consult with employees when errors occur, recommend corrective action, maintain minimum supply of inventory, document poor performance, interview candidates for positions in Chemistry. Additional duties: work as CLS or HLT as needed, perform additional duties, projects or special assignments requested by senior supervisor, complete within agreed time period, and in absence of senior supervisor, assume some senior supervisory responsibilities temporarily. Requiured Qualifications Two years of recent experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist Bachelor's degree in related area Writing Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures Maintains current knowledge of laboratory concepts, new methodologies and advances in the field of specimen processing, automation, and procedures Ability to apply principles in a clinical laboratory setting Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory, medical center, HR and UC policies and processes Thorough knowledge of all relevant sub‑specialty area industry, health and safety, federal, and state regulations Ability to organize assigned staff and laboratory operations in an efficient and effective manner Highly developed personal organizational skills Knowledge of quality assurance methods and ability to apply principles to design quality systems Proven ability to multi‑task and reliably manage multiple projects through from inception to completion on schedule in a complex, challenging environment Flexibility to adjust to constantly changing priorities Verbal and written communication skills to explain technical clinical specialty concepts, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel Ability to use laboratory’s application programs Skills to perform data checks using queries, visual review and other appropriate means to verify data accuracy Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process Interpersonal skills to independently convey information with authority, handle highly sensitive matters and interact with high level contacts from other organizations Preferred Qualifications Five years of recent experience in the Chemistry section of which at least 3 years must have been in a supervisory position Five years of recent CLS experience in high volume hospital clinical laboratory Development of assays Teaching, including orientation and training of employees Word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications Any recent CLS supervisory experience Experience in automated equipment/methods in the area of specialty Licensure in specialty area preferred Required Licenses California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license Equal Employment Opportunity The University of California is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
