Mammography Radiologic Supervisor

The Radiology Department is a specialty medical service that offers a wide range of imaging techniques to diagnose and treat a broad range of medical conditions. The Diagnostic Section utilizes ionizing radiation through the use x‑rays, radiography and fluoroscopy. At UCSF Medical Center, we offer the full spectrum of techniques, using the most advanced equipment. Combined with Bone Densitometry, Mammography, CT scans, MRI, PET, Ultrasound and Interventional we perform more than 500,000 procedures annually. In fact, a number of radiology advancements and applications were developed here. The Radiology Supervisor in Mammography is responsible for having a current CRT with the State of California and a current Mammography Certification with the State of California. Supervises all technologists and ancillary support staff under their direct supervision, training new employees, organizing the workflow, coordinating daily work schedules and shift coverage, knowledgeable in all procedures, and enhancing image quality. They are accountable for overseeing day‑to‑day operations of the imaging department and ensuring safe, efficient care of patients while maintaining fiscal responsibility for staff and supply levels. They are responsible for the productivity of the department and staff. Strong leadership skills are essential. The ability to effectively communicate with staff, patients and family members as well as physicians and other health care providers is required. The supervisor is a role‑model and ambassador for the department and must provide exceptional customer service and service recoveries. Responsible for attending various operations, safety and scheduling meetings and communicating essential information to the staff.
A. LEADERSHIP/SUPERVISION (55%)
Supervises employees in their daily work assignments and is responsible for workflow in the department. Monitors schedules and maintains adequate staffing for shifts, making necessary calls to maintain coverage. Follows procedures for shift handover and coverage of sick and tardiness. Works with the Associate Chief to ensure adequate coverage at all times. Assists with procedures and patient care. Trains staff to create a positive work environment and increase job skills. Uses appropriate forms for orientation and equipment orientation. Reviews and evaluates job performances continuously, communicating any issues to employees and the Associate Chief in a timely manner. Completes written performance appraisals by the due date. Maintains current licenses and certifications for all technologists. Organizes workflow according to urgency and acuity level. Coordinates patient examinations that have special circumstances or multiple examinations that need to interface with other radiology sections or departments. Facilitates patient transport. Monitors equitable distribution of workload and assignments. Assigns lunch and break relief. Maintains patient waiting times to a minimum through good planning and organization to maximize resource utilization. Coaches and instructs technologists as necessary in correct performance of department procedures, film quality, patient positioning and proper use of equipment. Encourages teamwork and cooperation. Answers telephone inquiries or requests and communicates information to facilitate the department’s services. Participates in the interview process for hiring new employees, making recommendations. Performs disciplinary action processes in a timely manner. Operates and displays expertise and skill in the use of all radiology equipment. Remains current on all procedures and troubleshooting of equipment problems.B. ADHERES TO POLICIES AND PROCEDURES (10%)
Is knowledgeable and enforces UCSF and department policies and procedures, keeping current on patient safety, including electrical, mechanical, fire, safety and disaster procedures. Provides excellent customer service to patients, co‑workers, physicians and other departments. Ensures work environment is clean and complies with infection control and environmental health and safety standards. Adheres to all regulatory agencies, Department of Health, JCAHO, Title 17, MQSA. Maintains professional, neat appearance and adheres to the department dress code. Displays the hospital identification badge and radiation badge at all times. Enforces established department and hospital guidelines for attendance and tardiness. Follows TUGs Operations Manual procedures for handling equipment such as nuclear medicine PET/CT at Mission Bay.C. INFORMATION MANAGEMENT (15%)
Demonstrates competency in the Radiology Information System (EPIC, APeX, RADIANT, Sectra). Correctly selects visit numbers and ensures clinical data accuracy. Uses hospital/department computers for business only. Protects confidentiality using own password. Ensures all exams in the system are completed and coded correctly.D. DEVELOPMENT (5%)
Assumes responsibility for professional growth and maintains licensure and required continuing education. Attends assigned staff development activities and cross‑training when necessary. Performs duties beyond assigned responsibilities when needed. Participates in professional meetings or seminars to stay current in radiology or supervisory/management fields. Enforces department employee expectations and standards.E. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT (5%)
Ensures daily, monthly, or annual quality control tests are complete and accurate, reporting non‑compliance. Documents and reports incidents involving patients, employees, or physicians in a timely manner, including injuries. Encourages staff participation in performance improvement activities.F. BUDGETARY (10%)
Maintains adequate levels of supplies, ordering as necessary. Complies with budget and staffing standards. Identifies opportunities for cost containment. Communicates suggestions to increase productivity or quality. Ensures patient information and billing codes are appropriate; all billing is complete at shift end. Qualifications Clinical practice knowledge and applied background in a mammography modality. 2–3 years of supervisory experience. 10 years of imaging experience; previous management or supervisory experience in a healthcare environment preferred. Flexibility in scheduling, ability to rotate shifts, sites and lead coverage for weekends and holidays. Ensures compliance with licensing and regulatory standards (Federal, State, ACR). Manages audit of required statistics and implements appropriate data collection for clinical, operational and financial outcomes, including MQSA QA/QC standards. Organizes division operations efficiently through improvement of radiology processes, protocols, databases and technology. Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with physicians, researchers, radiology technologists and other clinical staff; demonstrates sensitivity in communication with diverse patient populations. Diagnoses and troubleshoots equipment and software issues, contacting service personnel as needed; applies critical thinking to solve problems and propose solutions within procedures and policies. Exhibits strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to evaluate complex issues and identify options for resolution; demonstrates sound judgment. Communicates verbally and in writing effectively with all groups; demonstrates active listening, persuasion, advice and counseling abilities. Maintains and updates the Breast Imaging Policy and Procedure manual. Responsible for personnel performance evaluations for Breast Imaging. Collaborates with Regional Radiology managers regarding performance reviews. Assists in staffing decisions, termination and other personnel activities; plans, implements and evaluates staff development. Competes in procedures such as cyst aspirations, abscess drainage, fine needle aspirations, ultrasound‑guided core biopsies, stereotactic core biopsies (including specimen collection, post‑stereo imaging, pre‑surgical wire localization), magnetic seed placement, and related imaging techniques. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training. 2–3 years of prior supervisory experience.
