Job Title: Cardiac SonographerJob Description
The Cardiac Sonographer performs a broad range of diagnostic ultrasound procedures, including echocardiography, vascular, and general ultrasound studies, using prescribed and appropriate imaging techniques. This role focuses on producing high-quality diagnostic images, preparing detailed preliminary reports, and supporting physicians during ultrasound-guided procedures, all while ensuring patient comfort, safety, and clear communication throughout the exam process.
Responsibilities
Perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures using prescribed and proper methods of ultrasound techniques across echocardiography, cardiac ultrasound, vascular ultrasound, and general ultrasound.
Generate and produce high-quality diagnostic imaging using two-dimensional imaging, spectral Doppler, color flow Doppler, and other available imaging techniques.
Select appropriate transducers and adjust ultrasound equipment settings based on the organ or system being examined, depth of field, and other technical requirements to ensure accurate and productive testing.
Explain procedures to patients in a clear and reassuring manner, addressing questions and concerns to promote comfort and understanding.
Enter test data and patient information into computerized systems to maintain accurate and complete records of test results.
Prepare and generate detailed preliminary reports of ultrasound findings for review by physicians and other clinical staff.
Communicate STAT and other critical findings promptly, following established organizational processes and protocols.
Obtain patient consent when required and ensure all documentation is accurately transferred to the patient’s medical record.
Assist physicians with ultrasound-guided biopsies and other invasive procedures, ensuring proper imaging support and adherence to safety protocols.
Maintain ultrasound equipment according to manufacturer requirements and industry standards, performing routine maintenance at least once a month.
Monitor, record, and appropriately communicate information within computerized documentation systems to support clinical workflows.
Apply knowledge of age-specific patient needs when performing ultrasound examinations and related duties.
Contribute to the development and refinement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for ultrasound best practices.
Provide a safe environment for administering contrast material, adhering to standard precautions and safety guidelines.
Assist with transporting patients to and from the ultrasound room when needed.
Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required to maintain infection control and safety.
Travel to different office locations as needed to provide ultrasound coverage across multiple centers.
Perform other related duties as assigned, adapting to evolving clinical and operational needs.
Essential Skills
Demonstrated proficiency in cardiac ultrasound, echocardiography, and cardiovascular imaging.
Experience with vascular ultrasound and general ultrasound examinations.
Ability to interpret and acquire quality images using two-dimensional imaging, spectral Doppler, and color flow Doppler techniques.
Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) credential required to perform echocardiograms.
Registration in each specific ultrasound modality performed, such as vascular or general ultrasound.
Graduate of an accredited school in Ultrasound Technology.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, obtained within the first 90 days of employment if not already held.
A minimum of 6 months of related work experience post internship or externship required.
A minimum of 2 years of related work experience post internship or externship preferred.
Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to make sound, decisive judgments in a clinical setting.
Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability and willingness to travel locally and regionally up to 40% of the time to provide coverage at multiple centers.
Physical ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, and kneeling.
Ability to safely move and lift patients and/or equipment up to 50 pounds.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field preferred.
Bilingual communication skills are highly valued for patient interaction and care coordination.
Familiarity with cardiac telemetry and cardiovascular concepts.
Ability to influence and help create standard operating procedures (SOPs) for ultrasound best practices.
Comfort using computerized documentation systems and entering detailed clinical data.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex procedures in an easy-to-understand manner.
Commitment to maintaining equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and industry standards.
Ability to provide a safe environment for contrast administration and follow standard precautions.

Work Environment
This is a full-time position with working hours typically between 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The role provides coverage across six clinical centers in the Chicago area, with travel to different office locations as needed. The schedule is provided 1–2 weeks in advance, and you will not be required to float to multiple locations in a single day; you will know in advance which site you are scheduled to work at. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, requiring frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and lifting of patients or equipment up to 50 pounds. Ultrasound equipment and computerized documentation systems are used daily, and standard precautions with appropriate personal protective equipment are followed to maintain a safe clinical setting. Attire is typical of a professional clinical environment, suitable for direct patient care and use of medical equipment.
