Registered Nurse - Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) cares for diverse pediatric patients, requiring critical nursing skills and experience. The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:2, ensuring high-quality care.
Shift Details
12-hour shifts
Day shift: 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Night shift: 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
Weekend Work Requirement
Travelers will be scheduled for 5 weekends within each 6-week period, which may include either Saturday or Sunday shifts.
Floating Requirements
Travelers are expected to float within the scope of their competencies as needed, including moving between the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and general Pediatrics based on unit needs.
Time Off Policies
14 days or less of requests for time off (RTO) will be auto-approved.
Every other winter and summer holiday must be worked; no RTO is allowed during these holidays.
No RTO is permitted on critical days such as Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and similar dates.
Qualifications
Minimum of 1 year of experience in Pediatric Intensive Care is required.
Strong dysrhythmia interpretation and management experience.
Experience with central line and peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line management.
Proficiency in administering anti-seizure medications, continuous sedation, IV vasopressors, and pediatric dosage calculations.
ICP monitoring experience is essential.
Comfort and ability to care for ventilated pediatric patients and manage acute airways.
Experience in using BiPAP/CPAP, along with arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation and chest tube management.
Certification Requirements
BCLS/BLS certification.
PALS certification.
Basic EKG exam certification.
Special Equipment Experience
Familiarity with ventilators.
Experience with high-flow nasal cannula.
Experience with BiPAP/CPAP systems.
Charting System
Knowledge of Cerner is required for documentation and patient management.
Scrub Color
Navy pants are required as part of the nursing uniform.
Additional Information
This unit consists of 6 beds and serves infant, pediatric, and adolescent patients, managing various diagnoses including respiratory distress, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), seizures, and sepsis. Orientation for new staff is approximately 40 hours, which will incorporate virtual and on-unit training.
