Aircraft Mechanics/ Technicians inspect, diagnose, repair and monitor aircraft and aircraft systems such as structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, engines, power, and electrical/ electronic systems and components as assigned to work centers. Uses hand tools, power tools, machines and ancillary equipment required to perform assigned task. Read and interpret service and manufacturer maintenance manuals, instructions, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of maintaining and repairing malfunctioning aircraft. This position is located in Patuxent River, MD on the Naval Test Wing Atlantic (NTWL) Program.

Responsibilities

The Avionics Technician installs, inspects, tests, adjusts, or repairs avionics equipment, such as radar, communications, navigation, and missile control systems in assigned aircraft. Performs tasks independently with little or no supervision.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

• Performs operational checks, bench checks, troubleshoots, and isolates malfunctions in complex aircraft avionics equipment.
• Uses complex test equipment such as continuous wave and pulse generators, time domain reflectometers, multi-trace oscilloscopes, frequency counters, multi-meters and deviation meters, and specialized test equipment to perform operational checks.
• Repairs or replaces components based on test results following blueprints, schematics, handbooks, and other technical documents.
• Performs calibration, repair and replacement of system components based on test results following blueprints, schematics, handbooks, and other technical documents.
• Practices good housekeeping, tool control, FOD awareness/prevention, and safety at all times.
• Annotates maintenance actions in aircraft records and is knowledgeable in CAMS documentation.
• Comply with all current sections of COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series applicable to aircraft maintenance.
• Working knowledge of technical publications, NAMP and NALCOMIS aircraft maintenance applications.

Other or Additional Responsibilities:

• Perform other job-related duties as may be assigned.

Knowledge & Skills:

• In-depth knowledge of advanced electronic principles and circuit analysis.
• Ability to trace signal flow, understand interrelationships of circuits, interpret waveforms and voltages.
• Working knowledge of aircraft communications/navigation and instrument systems.
• Ability to interpret schematic diagrams, engineering drawings and charts of assigned systems.
• Excellent soldering and harness/wiring skills, PC board, surface mount and crimping experience.
• Working knowledge of all standard test equipment and maintenance procedures.
• Working knowledge of technical orders and maintenance forms.
• Possess a valid US State driver's license.
• Ability to read and interpret data is required.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
• Ability to obtain a government flight line driver's license.
• Ability to obtain a secret security clearance.

Qualifications

Experience & Education:

• High School degree or equivalent required.
• Completion of specialized courses in aircraft structural repair is required.
• Two (2) to Four (4) years recent experience in the repair of aircraft avionics, com/nav, or instrument systems of the AT-6, C-12, C-26, F-18, F-35, NU-1B, T-6B, T-38C, U-6A or AV-8B aircraft. Four (4) years preferred.

Physical Requirements / Working Environment:

• May work in Aircraft maintenance hangar or outside.
• May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances, including extreme weather conditions and rudimentary infrastructure.
• May be exposed to extreme noise from turbine and jet engine aircraft.
• May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles; may be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts, vehicles, or aircraft.
• Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for certain periods throughout the day.
• Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
• Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp, or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
• May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
• May be required to see aircraft in flight, read dials/gauges, identify small objects and hand tools.
• Must be able to see imperfections, micrometer readings and other small scales.
• Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
• Must be able to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depth.
• May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, APU, etc.

• Maryland Salary Range: USD $47.67
• Union Flex Benefit Credit: USD $3.00/HR
• Opt-Out Health Credit (must have your own coverage): USD $3.15/HR
