Fish Biologist.

Responsibilities Performs daily operational tasks at a large-scale salmonid hatchery, including incubating eggs, cleaning raceways and tanks, grading, sample counting, inventorying, monitoring and managing water quality, and diagnosing, controlling, and treating diseases to maintain fish health and quality. Executes a conventional feeding program in accordance with established guidelines, utilizing mechanical and hand methods, and observes for overfeeding or fish not eating. Loads fish onto trucks, safely transports them, and releases fish at target sites. Performs facility maintenance and assists with hatchery public use, environmental education, and outreach programs. Assists with hatchery imperiled species work including freshwater mussels and small-bodied fishes. Conditions of Employment Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. Merit promotion applicants must meet the time-in-grade requirement as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F. Suitability for employment as determined by background investigation. Driver’s license: Must have and maintain a valid state driver’s license throughout employment. Uniform: Official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform is required. 1‑year probationary period: Surgeon infection tasks and performance will be evaluated. Individuals assigned male at birth after December 31 1959 must be registered for Selective Service. Verify registration at SSS.gov. Work schedule: Shift work, emergency overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required. Basic Requirements Degree majoring in biological science with at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects (e.g., limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture) and at least 12 semester hours in animal sciences (e.g., general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics). Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours equivalent to a biological science major, with a minimum of 6 aquatic and 12 animal science hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications [GS‑07] One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑05 in the Federal service (public or private), including: Monitoring water quality and maintaining hatchery equipment. Performing fish health assessments and observing fish behavior to ensure no potential health issues. Collecting fish production data with software for record keeping. Preparing fish/eggs for shipment or distribution and assisting with stocking activities. One full year of graduate-level education in, or directly related to, fisheries and/or aquatics. Bachelor’s degree in biology with superior academic achievement (SAA) based on class standing, GPA, or honor society membership. Documentation proving SAA criteria must be provided. Combination of education and experience equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications [GS‑09] One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑07 in the Federal service, including: Monitoring water quality and maintaining hatchery equipment. Performing fish health assessments and observing fish behavior; participating in development of assessment plans for aquatic species populations. Coordinating fish production activities with stakeholders (Federal, State, Tribal, civic entities). Collecting fish production data with software for record keeping. Preparing fish/eggs for shipment and assisting with stocking activities. Generating reports on hatchery operations. Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or a master’s or equivalent graduate degree with a major study related to fisheries/aquatics. Combination of education and experience equivalent to the above 100% of requirement.
