Speech Language Pathology Assistant
This recruitment is to establish a six month eligibility list which will be used to fill current and future vacancies. Under the supervision of a licensed or credentialed Speech Language Pathologist, provides speech therapy services to students as prescribed by the Individual Educational Program (IEP); performs clerical duties in support of case management; performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Graduation from high school or its recognized equivalent.
- Certificate of Completion of a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant's program from an institution of higher learning accredited by a regional accreditation association.
- Experience: One (1) year experience working with individuals with speech and language disabilities in a structured environment.
- Licenses and Other Requirements: Possession of valid registration as a Speech/Language Pathology Assistant with the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board. A valid California driver's license and the availability of private transportation or the ability to provide transportation between job sites may be required.
Job Duties:
- Provides speech therapy services to students according to Individual Education Program (IEP) goals and the intervention plan developed for the student.
- Assists the Speech-Language Pathologist in assessment of students' communication skills.
- Assists in the development of IEP goals and objectives.
- Prepares materials and/or equipment for use in the classroom and therapy activities (e.g., picture cards, worksheets, and audio equipment).
- Adapts or modifies instructional materials as determined by student needs for teachers use in the classroom.
- Documents student's progress towards meeting IEP goals and objectives by preparing charts, records, graphs or other documentation.
- Provides assistance to the educational staff as part of case management through consultation, training and direct individual and group activities.
- Checks and maintains augmentative communication devices and equipment.
- Performs a variety of clerical tasks such as keeping records, files and reports related to assigned students.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.

- Speech Pathology equipment, materials and procedures.
- Normal speech and language development in children.
- Language disorders and rehabilitation.
- Articulation disorders and rehabilitation.
- English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
- Record keeping and records management.
- Practical learning patterns and behavior.
- Basic characteristics of human behavior.
- Elementary concepts of child development and behavior.
- Personal computers and standard office equipment.
- Basic communication skills.
- Basic math skills.
Ability to:
- Understand and carry out oral and written direction.
- Work independently with minimal instruction.
- Communicate with students and staff.
- Effectively react to emergencies.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with pupils and staff.
- Recognize and report safety hazards.
- Operate personal computer and standard office equipment.
- Perform routine clerical work.
- Use current technology related to the treatment of communication disorders.
- Learn and adapt to new procedures and conditions.
- Learn laws, rules, practices, and procedures related to public education for students.
- Model communication and interaction that respects and includes all individuals and their languages, abilities, religions and cultures.
Supervision and Working Conditions:
Supervision is provided by a licensed or credentialed Speech Language Pathologist. There are no lead or supervisory responsibilities. Environment: Classroom environment. Physical demands: Sitting, standing, walking; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment, augmentative communication devices and instructional materials; hearing and speaking to model clear English speech; seeing to read a variety of materials; bending at the waist, kneeling, crouching to assist students.

Examination Protests: Protest of any part of the examination process must be in writing and received in the office of the Director of Classified Personnel no later than five (5) working days from the date you were notified of examination results. All notifications are sent electronically via email. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. We are not responsible for any incoming mail that is lost or misdirected after it has been entrusted to the US Postal Service. Establishment of Eligibility List: This examination process shall be open to all qualified applicants and shall result in one integrated eligibility list. All eligibility lists shall be established in accordance with Personnel Commission rules and shall be established for a period one (1) year, unless otherwise noted, or until there are fewer than three (3) ranks of eligible candidates who are available. Candidates are placed on the eligibility list in rank order according to their final examination score. Final examination scores will not change, but ranking may change as other candidates are added or removed from the list. Advanced Step Placement: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the appointed salary schedule. When filling a permanent vacancy, a new employee may request a higher salary placement based on having training and experience that greatly exceeds the minimum qualifications. An employee may submit a formal request for advanced step consideration on or after the first day of employment. Education transcripts, training certificates, and additional references may be requested for verification purposes.
