Job Description

The Lucas County Engineer's Office is seeking a skilled Mechanic to join our dynamic team of Mechanics. In this vital role, you will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of medium to heavy trucks, construction equipment, and related accessories used in the maintenance of highways, bridges and drainage systems. This work requires a skilled mechanic to perform mechanical and electrical work of a high level of difficulty and responsibility. Welding experience desired.

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of a Fleet Manager or direction of a Lead Mechanic, this position entails the following responsibilities:

• Repairs and reconditions trucks, tractors, excavators, snow plows, compressors, graders, pumps, concrete mixers, motors, chain saws, and other mechanical equipment used in Public Works.
• Inspects and repairs transmissions, universal joints, and differentials; repairs and adjusts lights; and repairs brakes, generators, and starters.
• Inspects electrical systems and equipment and tests them by using a variety of standard testing equipment and instruments to locate actual or potential sources of electrical failure. Repairs or replaces defective parts and/or wiring. Tests to locate shorts or open circuits in wiring or other electrically operated mechanisms and makes final checking using multimeter or appropriate tools.
• Performs vehicle paint repairs.
• Performs welding as qualified.
• Fabricates iron and steel.
• Performs tire and wheel services.
• Utilizes a computer to enter information for parts, services and inventory.
• Utilizes forklift, jacks, hoists and other equipment in the garage.
• Serves as a back up to Drivers during snow and ice season. May operate dump truck with accessory equipment (plows, v-box, auger).
• Serves as a back up to Stock Service Technician
• Performs related work as required.

Work is typically performed in the garage, but may also be performed out in the field on public roadways.

This position requires wearing the established mechanic's uniform. Class II or III safety apparel shall be worn while in the field/public right of way. PPE shall be provided and worn as appropriate to the task in accordance with policy.

This position is subject to various hours and overtime. From October to April, work hours are Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. From May to September, work hours are Monday-Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During snow and ice season, hours may be adjusted to 12-hour shifts to accommodate for 24-hour coverage for the maintenance and repair of essential equipment. This position may also be subject to emergency call-outs. The successful employee must be able to work the scheduled and unscheduled overtime, to include nights, weekends and holidays as the work requires.

The starting hourly wage for this position is $29.27 per hour and is overtime eligible. Outside of shift and Saturdays qualify for time and a half. Sundays and holidays qualify for double time. In addition to the hourly rate, license pay is awarded for each T series ASE obtained at the rate of 1.5% of the hourly rate per ASE, up to a max of 12% for all 8 ASEs (additional $.43-$3.51 per hour). The cost of ASE certification and recertification shall be reimbursed by the Engineer. The maximum starting rate with all 8 ASEs is $32.78. The Lead Mechanic earns an additional $1.00 per hour and must be Master Service Technician qualified. Additional compensation is awarded annually in May as a cost of living adjustment, and on the employee's anniversary of employment, up to maximum limits.

Qualifications

• Ability to interact positively with and communicate clearly within a team of Mechanics and Highway Workers.
• A minimum of two (2) years documented experience as a skilled mechanic including experience in repairing medium to heavy trucks, as well as equipment mechanical and electrical system. Completion of an ASE-accredited formal education program may count as one (1) of the two (2) required years.
• Must possess current ASE Medium/Heavy Truck (T series) certification in Brakes and Preventative Maintenance and Inspection, or be able to immediately obtain. All eight (8) T series for Master Service Technician is preferred. Must maintain ASEs during employment.
• Previous welding experience preferred.
• Must hold a valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement of resident state with driving privileges in the State of Ohio, or be able to immediately obtain. Must maintain CDL A during employment. Subject to FMSCA Clearinghouse pre-employment and annual queries.
• Must have an acceptable driving record and be insurable under county policy.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen, and be willing to submit to random testing during employment.
• Manual dexterity is required to operate tools and equipment, and will require the employee at times to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch and use vision and hearing acuity on inspections and repairs. Must also submit to a pre-employment physical.
