ATTENDING PHYSICIAN 8 PALLIATIVE MEDICINE - GENERAL MEDICINE

LOCATION: JOHN H STROGER JR HOSPITAL - PALLIATIVE MEDICINE Job Summary The Attending Physician will work within the Section of Palliative Medicine. Responsibilities include 12–14 weeks per year as the Lead Attending for inpatient consultative services, participation in and oversight of inpatient consultative services to adults and children at Stroger Hospital, grief counseling for families experiencing a hospital death, advance care planning, and serving as a back‑up or second inpatient consultative Attending throughout the year. The physician will also participate in outpatient palliative services, serve as consultative or primary care for patients with high symptom burden, complex or chronic illness, and participate in teaching of fellows and medical students. Typical Duties Clinical Assess and manage patients with terminal, advanced, or serious illness. Participate in the care of inpatient and ambulatory patients seen by the palliative care medicine service as a consultant or primary physician. Work with a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, APNs, social workers, and chaplains. Teaching and Training Teach and supervise medical students, residents, and fellows in inpatient and outpatient settings. Quality Improvement Participate in quality improvement efforts to enhance patient care quality in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Minimum Qualifications Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution. Licensed as a physician in the State of Illinois or eligible to obtain license prior to starting employment. Illinois and Federal controlled substance license or eligibility to obtain license prior to starting employment. Board certification in Hospice & Palliative Medicine or eligibility to obtain certification within three (3) years of completing a Palliative Care residency or fellowship. Completion of residency training and Board certification in one of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, or Psychiatry. Completion of an ACGME‑accredited fellowship or residency in Hospice & Palliative Medicine prior to starting employment, or an equivalent practice‑pathway training completed prior to 2010. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Other Characteristics Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Strong written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary to work respectfully and effectively with patients and staff in a culturally diverse environment. Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team. Ability to utilize an electronic medical record. Physical and Environmental Demands This position functions within a healthcare environment. The incumbent must adhere to all hospital and department safety requirements, including PPE, hand hygiene, engineering controls, and other safety precautions as specified by hospital policy.
