The Shop Mechanic is responsible for the disassembly, repair, assembly, troubleshooting, and quality verification of complex mechanical equipment. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, independent judgment, and a consistent commitment to safety, quality, and productivity while working on a variety of industrial and mobile equipment systems.

Responsibilities

• Perform mechanical disassembly and reassembly of equipment with complex functions, using independent judgment to ensure proper operation.

• Tear down and rebuild a variety of used industrial equipment, following established procedures and quality standards.

• Learn products through self-study, hands-on experience, and guidance from experienced team members.

• Assist in all aspects of the rebuild and refurbishment process, from initial teardown through final assembly and testing.

• Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on mobile and industrial equipment.

• Diagnose and repair battery-powered, air-cooled, and water-cooled combustion engines, including diesel, gas, and LP systems.

• Safely use, maintain, and report on company tools, equipment, and property, ensuring they remain in good working condition.

• Complete work in a timely manner while exercising sound judgment to meet quality and cost targets.

• Perform in-process quality checks and communicate results clearly to team members and leadership as needed.

• Identify, document, and communicate safety concerns to help maintain a safe work environment.

• Make adjustments during the build process to ensure a high-quality finished product that meets specifications.

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace by following housekeeping and 5S practices.

• Identify continuous improvement opportunities and report them through established tier structures.

• Demonstrate proficiency in multiple sub-assembly operations and short cycle-time main line stations as needed.

• Maintain a professional appearance and ensure company equipment is kept in good condition.

• Demonstrate punctuality and reliability, including having dependable transportation to and from work.

Essential Skills

• Strong mechanical aptitude and experience using hand tools and wrenches for assembly, service, and repair work.

• 1 to 4 years of experience performing mechanical or electrical repairs on mobile equipment, appliances, office equipment, electronics, rental equipment, automotive, or similar systems.

• Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on mobile equipment.

• Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing battery-powered, air-cooled, and water-cooled combustion engines, including diesel, gas, and LP systems.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and electrical schematics accurately.

• Capability to perform mechanical disassembly, reassembly, and rebuild work on complex industrial equipment.

• Strong attention to safety, with the ability to identify, document, and communicate safety concerns.

• Ability to perform in-process quality checks and clearly communicate findings.

• Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain consistent attendance with dependable transportation.

• High school diploma or equivalent.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Vocational or technical school diploma in a related field is a plus.

• Experience working with hydraulics and mobile equipment repair is beneficial.

• Familiarity with 5S and continuous improvement practices in a shop environment.

• Ability to learn new products and systems through self-study and hands-on experience.

• Comfort working in multiple sub-assembly operations and short cycle-time main line stations.

• Strong communication skills for collaborating with team members and reporting issues or improvement ideas.

• Professional appearance and a strong sense of ownership over tools and equipment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a smaller off-site building that is currently undergoing renovation, providing an evolving and improving workspace. You will work as part of a close-knit team of about 11 people, with plans to grow to around 20 team members, fostering collaboration and shared expertise. The environment is shop-focused, with regular use of hand tools and industrial equipment, and an emphasis on maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area through housekeeping and 5S practices. A professional appearance is expected, and the setting supports hands-on mechanical and electrical work in a structured, safety-conscious atmosphere.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Minneapolis, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
