Assistant Nurse Manager

Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supports the Nurse Manager (NM) with the operation of their designated unit(s). Provides coverage for other ANMs as needed. Responsible and accountable for the direction and oversight of specific orientation, training, development of staff, and evaluation of individual staff performance. Develops ability to function as a role model, educator, practitioner, and leader. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team to remove barriers and implement new evidence-based cutting-edge programs/processes. This position is 80% clinical and 20% administrative. The Supervisory ANM is typically responsible for assisting the NM but is not responsible for independently carrying out the expectations of the NM on a routine basis. Exercises the authority to direct work, assign duties, evaluate employee performance, recommend employee awards, approve or deny leave, recall employees to duty, propose discipline, and adjust their grievances, or to effectively recommend such proposed discipline or grievance adjustments for employees under their direct supervision. Some common examples include but are not limited to the following examples:

• Serving as the first line supervisor of nursing personnel in the patient care area ensuring the head nurse/NM retains VA Handbook 5007 requirements (examples may include but are not limited to supervising the nursing assistants and/or licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/LVNs) in the patient care area.
• Approving schedules and leave for employees under their direct supervision
• Appraising performance, recommending performance standards, and recommending performance awards for employees under their direct supervision
• Serving as hiring official during the recruitment process for employees under their direct supervision
• Recommending proposed discipline or grievance adjustments for employees under their direct supervision
