The City offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits for both positions.Assistant City Attorney Salary Range: $84,997 – $120,000The Assistant City Attorney advises the City Council and staff under the guidance of the City Attorney. Responsibilities include:Legal advisory and drafting: Provide timely legal advice, draft ordinances, resolutions, and supporting memoranda, and ensure clarity in City policies and procedures.Transactional legal services: Draft, negotiate contracts, and create uniform transaction templates.Legislation tracking and evaluation: Monitor new legislation and assess implications for City operations.Litigation, administrative proceedings, and related duties: Manage civil litigation, coordinate with external parties, support document review, and participate in emergency response efforts.Senior Assistant City Attorney Salary Range: $120,000 – $160,000The Senior Assistant City Attorney provides complex legal advice and counsel to city officials and departments. Responsibilities include:Program management: Oversee the City Attorney's Office Summer Intern/Law Clerk Program, supervising participants.Meeting and coordination: Participate in public meetings and hearings; collaborate with the City Clerk and City Manager on preparatory work.Training and orientation: Conduct FOIA and COIA training for Council members and other local boards; train staff on FOIA, COIA, and Procurement Act; orient new Council members.Independent work and support: Handle complex legal work independently, train others, maintain communication with the City Attorney, and carry out essential duties of the Assistant City Attorney.Benefits The City offers medical, vision, and dental coverage, paid leave, paid training, and participation in the Virginia Retirement System.Minimum Qualifications Assistant City Attorney Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.Previous experience practicing law, especially local government law (preferred).Senior Assistant City Attorney Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.Five years of full‑time experience in local government law with demonstrated mastery and progression of supervisory duties or increasing complexity of legal representation, or equivalent experience as a licensed attorney in the public or private sector.How to Apply Apply online at .
