Radiology Technologist (ARRT) - Radiology/Diagnostic, Per Diem, Variable Shifts

Radiologic Technologist

Performs all radiographic procedures for assigned patients.

Under the general direction of the Director of Imaging Services, and the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Radiology Diagnostic and within established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, the incumbent performs the following essential functions:

1. Adheres to the ALARA principles of Radiation Safety.
2. Maintains a working knowledge of all radiographic equipment within the department.
3. Performs all routine radiographic procedures and views.
4. Prepares and/or administers contrast media, i.e., orally, IV, rectally.
5. Provides radiation protection to patient, staff and self-according to prescribed safety standards.
6. Recognizes emergency situations, initiates code procedures, and administers first aid/CPR.
7. Records patient history, unusual conditions/limitations and other information such as exam time, room number, technique.
8. Re-stocks supplies and maintains assigned work station/equipment in an orderly fashion and orders appropriate supplies.
9. Adjusts technical factors in proportion to patient and body part being examined while minimizing radiation.
10. Performs and/or assists with radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures.
11. Performs and/or assists with radiographic examinations during operative procedures.
12. Follows all National Patient Safety Goals for each exam.
13. Positions patient to obtain desired views; applies immobilization devices as required.
14. Attends meetings and seminars external to the department in order to maintain professional acumen.
15. Assists in the movements of patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers, and radiographic tables.
16. Assists physician with radiographic procedures.
17. Attends regularly scheduled meetings, i.e., staff, in-service training.
18. Checks requisition for special instructions.
19. Completes appropriate paperwork.
20. Confirms patient identification by verbal confirmation, ID band, etc.
21. Describes nature and time requirements of requested examinations to patient.
22. Greets and introduces self to patient.
23. Identifies problems and communicates to immediate supervisor, offers solutions as appropriate.
24. Keeps room/work station neat and orderly.
25. Participates in identified professional organizations.
26. Participates in appropriate role in hospital disasters, fire drills, fires and other emergency situations.
27. Exercises care in the operation and use of hospital equipment and reference materials. Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continuing functioning of equipment.
28. Checks all physician orders prior to performing exam.
29. Performs similar or related duties as assigned or requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities and to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices to safely perform the essential functions of the job:

1. Ability to deliver patient care in a manner that is appropriate to the demographics and/or specific needs of the patient population served by the hospital.
2. Demonstrates proficiency in assessing, responding and adapting treatment of care to meet the needs of the patient population served by the hospital.
3. Physical requirements include ability to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist; ability to reach arms above head in a twisting movement; bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine; extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction; standing for sustained periods of time; moving about on foot to accomplish tasks; use upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward; use upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motions, raise object from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position, pick, pinch, type or otherwise work with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm; applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm; perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
4. Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Essential function includes activities in which incumbent must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to patients, physicians, families and other employees, accurately, loudly or quickly.
5. Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Walking substantial amounts of time is required.
6. Visual acuity sufficient to work with analyzing data and figures, working with computer terminals, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and operation of machines.
7. Ability to plan and perform diversified duties requiring an extensive knowledge of radiology, and the use of a wide range of procedures. Involves the exercise of judgment in the analysis of facts and conditions regarding individual problems or transactions to determine what actions should be taken, within the limits of standard practice.
8. Ability to work with frequent interruptions and respond appropriately to unexpected situations.
9. Ability to work with wide variations in workload and stress levels.
10. Possess ability to perform functions alone following standard practices for routine procedures where questionable cases may be referred when they arise outside of the normal practice.

Work Schedule:

• Must be able to work weekends, all three shifts and holidays.
• During an orientation period the Technologist will be expected to work a minimum of one eight hour shift opposite what they are hired for.

Qualifications:

Education:

• Completion of a formal Radiological Technologist training in an ARRT approved school.

Experience:

• Completion of a twenty-four-month clinical internship.

Licensure/Certification:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
• Current registration as an ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) must renew certification and/or registration annually with 24 hours of continuing education bi-annually.
• Licensed in the State of New Hampshire with the Board of Medical Imaging & Radiation Therapy.
