Teaching Associate, Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) in the Division of Midwifery, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Join our team of Certified Nurse Midwives and Ob/Gyn physicians at University of Washington Medical Center Montlake in Seattle, WA. We are currently seeking a full scope Certified Nurse Midwife to join our midwifery practice. This position is a full-time 1.0 FTE position with a 12 month (July 1 - June 30) academic position on a yearly appointment with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2027. Teaching Associates hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms. Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.
The base salary range for this position will be: $10,834 - $14,667 per month ($130,008 - $170,004 annually) with competitive total compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) Position Responsibilities High Acuity Midwifery Care
The successful candidate will be expected to provide full-scope midwifery care within an all-CNM practice group, including independent management of women's health with a primary focus on pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care, as well as family planning, gynecologic, and primary care of women. This individual will deliver high acuity intrapartum and obstetric care, including co-management of medically and obstetrically complex patients (e.g., preeclampsia and hypertensive disorders, diabetes in pregnancy and other high-risk conditions) in collaboration with Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) faculty and other providers.
As a member of our all-CNM practice group, this individual will practice within the University of Washington academic healthcare system, which provides for consultation, collaborative management, or referral to obstetrics, perinatology, and other specialties as indicated by client health status. Candidates will be expected to function effectively within a collaborative, team-based model that supports rapid escalation of care when clinical acuity increases; manage hospital labor assessment, obstetric triage, and admission; oversee normal and abnormal labor, including advanced fetal heart rate monitoring and interpretation; and perform cervical ripening and labor induction. The successful candidate will perform vaginal birth and laceration repair (first-, second-, and as appropriate to training); limited first-, second-, and third-trimester obstetric ultrasound as appropriate to training and experience; cesarean section first surgical assist; and IUD and subdermal contraceptive implant insertion and removal. This individual will also provide postpartum care and discharge of mothers, including management of the higher-acuity postpartum patient.
Candidates will be expected to maintain current competency in required acute care credentials (e.g., NRP, BLS/ACLS as applicable, advanced electronic fetal monitoring, and obstetric emergency management) and maintain medical records according to community standards of practice.
Work Experience
- Experience as a full scope midwife, including C-section first assist preferred
- Previous training or experience with OB ultrasound preferred, but not required
- Experience teaching in a healthcare setting is preferred but not required
Special Training/Skills
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and acuity of the patients served by the assigned unit/department or clinic.
- Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Ability to learn and work comfortably with electronic medical records (Training will be provided).
- Ability to appropriately counsel and educate patients and families about complex care issues via phone or in person
- Able to effectively and respectfully communicate and collaborate with midwife partners and others, including but not limited to physicians, management, nursing, and support staff
- Teaching skills and ability to give appropriate positive and constructive feedback
- Flexibility in responding to needs of clinic schedule, practice partners, and patients
Physical Demand Level: Medium
- Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to move freely throughout the clinic and hospital.
- In an 812-hour workday, must be able to:
- Lift / Carry: 20 to 50 pounds occasionally. 10 to 25 pounds frequently. up to 10 pounds constantly.
- As required, must be able to:
- Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Kneel, Crawl, and Climb.
- Reach above shoulders.
- Push and pull.
- Perform fine motor functions.
- Must possess functional vision, hearing, and speech in order to communicate effectively with clients, client advocates, and staff.
Faculty Expectations
Candidates will be expected to provide medical services at University of Washington-affiliated hospitals and to assist in the training of student midwives, medical students, and residents in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including instruction in the management of high-acuity intrapartum care. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Qualifications
Education (a foreign equivalent is acceptable)
- Masters or Doctorate Degree in Nurse-Midwifery or Midwifery required
Licensure, Registration, Certification (a foreign equivalent is acceptable)
- Current CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) certification
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) License for the State of Washington
- Current Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) license for the State of Washington with prescriptive authority
- CPR/BLS certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) certification (active within 3 months of hire.)
- DEA registration
- EFM certification (can be arranged during onboarding if not already certified)
