Description O.E. DuRant, Inc. ( has an opportunity available for a Lineboat Deckhand. This is a Casual Relief, hourly, non-exempt position. O.E. DuRant, Inc., located in Wilmington, NC and Charleston, SC, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Moran Towing Corporation, and, working with Moran Environmental Recovery, provides ship chandlery and line boat services to customers. POSITION SUMMARY The Line Boat Deckhand ("Deckhand") position at O.E. Durant, Inc. works as a valued member of the line handling operations. This job primarily consists of handling lines on Line Boats, piers, and docks on Company property, private property, federal and state restricted property and on inland waters. The Deckhand is responsible for safe and efficient mooring and/or unmooring of foreign and domestic vessels. It is s trongly preferred that candidates live within a 10 mile radius of the position location due to the on-call nature of the job. As a member of the vessel's crew, the Deckhand actively participates in all safety and environmental programs, including emergency drills. The incumbent will practice safety at all times, comply with all Company regulations and procedures, and give prompt, "First Class" service. The Deckhand reports directly to the Captain of the Line Boat. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED, TO:
- Fully conversant with, and always work according to, the Company's Safety Management System.
- Reports unsafe situations immediately as well as opportunities for improvement to the Captain.
- Assists the Captain in pre-sail safety checks and routine inspections of the vessel's safety equipment.
- Cooperates with other crew members, assists to perform their jobs efficiently and safely.
- Runs lines to make vessel fast to the berth or turn loose for the vessel to set sail, either manually or under line boat power.
- Delivers pallets or goods via launch service to vessels.
- Assists in the transfer of cargo when necessary and as directed by the Captain.
- Ensures safe, smooth operations by always being aware of surroundings, including paying attention to the safety of the ship's crew as much as paying attention to the safety of yourself and others on your vessel.
- Helps with maintenance tasks, equipment checks, or any other duties assigned by the Captain.
- Communicates accurate, timely information in a professional manner with own crew, terminal employees, and visiting vessel crews.
- Maintains and protects all property in excellent condition.
- Acts as the lookout as required.
- Demonstrates thorough familiarity with the vessel's equipment.
- Carries out vessel and equipment cleaning post job, as well as maintenance duties when assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Captain or his designate.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
- Strong background in marine environment, with experience on commercial vessels preferred.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude for operating vessel/machinery/equipment.
- Ability to read, speak and understand English over radio, telephone and/or radio.
- Valid Driver's License and safe driving record are required and must be maintained during employment. Incumbent must adhere to the requirements of the Company's Driver Safety Policy.
- Demonstrated knowledge of using cargo information cards and material safety data sheets.
- Basic computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Must demonstrate, or be willing to learn, basic seamanship skills and knowledge, e.g. splicing, rigging, lifting, etc.
- Demonstrated organizational, written, and verbal communication skills for effective teamwork.
- Demonstrated good judgment for effective problem solving.
- Ability and willingness to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours, including taking call outs and working weekends, holidays, and at nights.
- Climb ladders as well as board and disembark boats safely.
- Sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Frequently reach with hands and arms.
- Work safely and navigate in a marine setting.
- Speak, hear, and see (close vision and color vision).
- Occasionally crouch or stoop.
- Frequently lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs.
- Hear and respond to verbal communication in noisy environments such as piers, docks, and warehouses with moving heavy equipment.
- Withstand exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, rain, cold and or/humidity.
