POSITION SUMMARY: The Teacher is responsible for conducting developmentally appropriate activities for children according to Head Start Performance Standards, COA, NAEYC guidelines, and ensuring compliance with all Performance Standards and DCF licensing requirements. All activities are completed in accordance with agency policy, federal, state, and local laws, Head Start performance standards, and the Head Start contract. The Teacher demonstrates sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics and exhibits proper timeliness and organization to meet duties and responsibilities listed below. Essential Job Functions Oversee, plan, and manage the education, care, safety, and well‑being of each child. Develop daily lesson plans and employ strategies that address children’s individual needs based on meaningful anecdotes and scaffolding. Arrange the classroom learning environment according to NAEYC guidelines and modify it throughout the year to reflect children’s interests and growth. Prepare children and their families for transitions. Promote and maintain universal health and safety standards. Maintain a clean and sanitary environment, including classroom, bathroom, and outdoor facilities, at all times. Conduct and document parent/teacher conferences per program guidelines; share daily incidents with parents/guardians. Demonstrate regular attendance and participation in required training and professional development. Reporting & Compliance Tasks Complete and record assessments for children within 45 days according to Head Start requirements. Ensure that all screening and evaluations are conducted in a timely manner per program guidelines and due dates. Make timely referrals for any child with suspected special needs, health concerns, or consecutive absences to the case manager. Report any suspected child abuse and neglect immediately pursuant to Florida law. Conduct two (2) home visits per program requirements. Make accurate records and reports to the supervisor of any accidents or unusual incidents. Adhere to all regulatory guidelines, including agency policy and procedures, center guidelines, Head Start regulations, and DCF accreditation standards. Additional Duties Ensure that all children are dropped off and picked up by a parent, legal guardian, or authorized person as indicated in the child enrollment form and center’s card. Maintain zero monitoring deficiencies. Obtain written consent for special needs services. Measure weight and height of children and document appropriately. Ensure daily attendance is completed within the allotted time. Make timely and accurate data entry for all required documentation. Record daily meal counts per the CCFP and agency meal count documentation process. Comply with USDA Food Program guidelines, including recommended portions, family‑style serving, and menu/nutrition discussions; involve parents in healthy nutrition habits. Accurately complete the daily health check for each child. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including spelling, composition, and grammar. Read and write standard English, and produce grammatically correct lesson plans, reports, incident reports, referral forms, and anecdotal notes. Speak basic English using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to communicate with children, parents, and colleagues. Proficiency in using Head Start and Catholic Charities databases. Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, children, and team members. Complete required training hours per DCF, COA, Head Start, VPK, and other applicable regulatory requirements. Professional Responsibilities Perform assigned duties consistently and efficiently with professionalism and courtesy. Adhere to all Catholic Charities policies and procedures, maintaining knowledge and understanding of these policies. Maintain a professional demeanor at all times with supervisors, subordinates, parents, guardians, and volunteers. Maintain confidentiality where required. Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues, parents, and community partners. Attend professional meetings, conferences, and workshops to maintain and improve professional competence. Perform additional duties as assigned. Managerial Responsibilities Supervise and evaluate the Teacher Aide, in conjunction with the Education Coordinator. Plan assignments and supervise volunteers and the Teacher Aide. Participate in annual performance evaluations of the Teacher Aide. Conduct training for the Teacher Aide and volunteers. Physical Demands Regular lift, bend, stoop, stretch, walk, squat, push, pull, kneel, crawl, sit on low chairs or the floor; lift children (up to 50 lbs.). Use hands and fingers to handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms; detect unsafe situations by sight or sound; move quickly to intervene. See clearly, understand, and respond promptly to environmental signals. Environment Demands Moderate to high noise levels in a childcare setting. Exposure to a variety of weather conditions and indoor environments. Exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases. Educational & Experiential Requirements DCF 45‑hour certification: 30 Child Care Training Hours, 10 Special Needs Hours, and 5 Literacy Hours. Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Child Development or Early Childhood Education, or a degree with 18 credits in early childhood education and experience teaching preschool‑age children. Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with 18 credits in Early Childhood Education. Experience supervising teaching staff (if applicable). Reporting To: Education Coordinator.
