Medical Director, Kidney Transplant Program

Department of Medicine | Section of Nephrology

Boston Medical Center | Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine

Position Overview

Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine (BUCASM) seek a transplant nephrologist to serve as the Medical Director, Kidney Transplant Program. This is an exceptional opportunity for a visionary physician leader to shape the kidney transplantation program at one of the nation’s premier academic safety-net health systems.

The Opportunity

Boston Medical Center is making a strategic investment in the continued advancement of its Kidney Transplant Program. BMC cares for one of the largest dialysis populations in New England and is committed to increasing access to kidney transplantation for our communities.

The next Medical Director will lead a transformative period for the program by expanding transplant volume, strengthening regional referral relationships, increasing living donor transplantation, enhancing quality and patient outcomes, and positioning the program among the leading academic kidney transplant programs in the Northeast.

The successful candidate will build upon the program’s strong clinical foundation while developing innovative approaches to care delivery, physician engagement, patient access, and multidisciplinary collaboration. This leader will play a critical role in advancing BMC’s commitment to providing equitable, patient-centered care to the diverse communities it serves.

About the Department

Located in Boston’s historic South End, the Department of Medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center is renowned for its impactful teaching and research programs and state-of-the-art clinical care for patients. The department is dedicated to an urban, underserved patient population, supporting the longstanding social mission of BMC. Faculty and trainees of the Department care for patients throughout the City of Boston, from Boston Medical Center to the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System to affiliated community health centers.

As the primary teaching hospital for Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, BMC offers an exceptional environment for physician leaders committed to advancing academic medicine while addressing health disparities and improving outcomes for diverse patient populations.

The Section of Nephrology at BUCASM/BMC has a rich tradition of excellence in clinical care and research with 20+ faculty, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), and eight nephrology fellows. Faculty are nationally recognized for contributions to basic, translational, and clinical science while maintaining an unwavering commitment to education and compassionate patient care.

The clinical services of the Nephrology Section include inpatient consult services staffed by nephrology fellows; an inpatient teaching service staffed by internal medicine housestaff and medical students; transplant nephrology and transplant fellow rotation; outpatient clinics at Boston Medical Center and affiliated neighborhood health centers; and two dialysis units, one of which is walking distance from the main campus. Our outpatient services also include subspecialty clinics in lupus nephritis, resistant hypertension, sickle cell nephropathy, and amyloidosis.

Position Summary

The Medical Director serves as the physician leader for the Kidney Transplant Program and is responsible for the strategic direction, program development, clinical performance, quality outcomes, regulatory oversight, and continued advancement of the program.
