Utility Maintenance Worker

Job TitleAn employee in this class performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled equipment operation and labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of utility lines and related appendices. Work involves tasks to dig, build, repair and replace sections of water and sewer lines and services, hydrant and valve maintenance, meter installs and repair, etc. and using a variety of tools to perform the assigned tasks. As needed the employee operates light to heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, loaders, forklifts, compactions equipment, and multiple hand-held devices in situations requiring skill and care to dig around underground and overhead utility lines (which involves high voltage electric), near traffic, in traffic in both minor streets and multilane NCDOT highways, beside houses, behind houses, between houses and in other tight places etc. Employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments and in confined spaces, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work around wastewater is subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Employees are also required to serve rotating on-call and call-back work. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection for adherence to instructions and standard trade and safety practices.
