Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 2:00 - 10:00PM
Purpose of Position:
Under general supervision of the Construction Manager, this position involves a wide variety of painter duties involving the maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction work in all Madison Metropolitan School District facilities, including surfaces containing lead (Pb) based finishes.
This position will have a high degree of integrity, sustain a culture of continuous improvement, and be committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive work environment while having a growth mindset to a multi-faceted operation while having a focus on creating a positive work culture.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintenance and Repair 85%
- Completing interior and exterior paint-related activities associated with maintenance, repair and remodeling work including surfaces that contain lead (Pb) based finishes
- Stripping and refinishing work
- Patching, taping and finishing of gypsum wallboard
- Color mixing and matching of putty, stains and paints
- Administrative work 10%
- Assisting in estimating labor, materials and supplies for work assigned
- Maintaining records of materials and labor associated with assigned work
- Other Duties as Assigned 5%
- Performs other duties as assigned by executive leadership or their representatives or designees
- Attend district and school functions that support MMSD's strategic framework, initiatives, and core values
- Complete any and all district required training
- Build collaborative relationships with business partners
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:
- Demonstrated ability to establish relationships at all levels of the organization

- Ability to work from shop drawings, blueprints and sketches.
- Ability to plan and layout repair and maintenance work.
- Ability to prepare drawings and sketches for job-related work.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with co-workers, contractors, technical consultants, students and the public.
- Ability to work varied working hours and be available on an emergency basis.
- Knowledge and the ability with exterior painting including surface preparation methods, material application techniques and paint removal methods.
- Knowledge and ability with interior painting including: wood finishing, preparation of stains, wall washing methods and material application techniques.
- Knowledge and ability to patch, tape, and finish gypsum wallboard systems.
- Knowledge and ability to operate and maintain Airless and HVLP painting systems.
- Knowledge and ability with paint and stain mixing and matching.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations including those pertaining to ladders, staging, swing scaffolds, ropes, environmental and fire hazards.
- Knowledge and ability with the set-up and use of staging, scaffolding, ladders, swing scaffolds, moving scaffolds and lifts.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the painting trade
- Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward one's own cultural competence (i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas)
License Requirements:
- Valid Wisconsin Driver's License
- Journeyworker Painter License/Certification preferred
- Lead Safe Renovator License preferred
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury. This position requires frequent lifting up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting up to 70 pounds. This position may require being stationary for extended periods of time. There is frequent sitting, driving, squatting, crouching, ladder and stair climbing, able to handle 30 ft heights, crawling, reaching, kneeling and repetitive movements with both hands. Near and far vision acuity, depth perception, accommodation, field of vision, and feeling are frequently utilized. Verbal and auditory communication is frequently used.
Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including in inclement weather, spaces without air conditioning, and areas where temperatures may be uncomfortable or fluctuate rapidly.
Working Conditions:
- May involve exposure to asbestos and lead based surfaces.
- Work requires travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings.
- Position requires working evenings, nights, and some weekends.
- Certain positions within the District may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any remote work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process
- School-based positions are required to be in-person unless otherwise directed by the building principal.
