Sheetmetal/Ductwork MechanicThe Sheetmetal/Ductwork Mechanic serves as a leader within the field workforce and plays a critical role in mentoring apprentices, supporting project success, and upholding the reputation of through exceptional workmanship and customer service.Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesDuctwork InstallationInstall rectangular, round, spiral, oval, double-wall, lined, and specialty duct systems (stainless, aluminum, welded, grease/kitchen exhaust, and pressure-class ductwork) per SMACNA standards and project specifications.Lay out duct runs from drawings, verify field dimensions, and coordinate routing with structure, piping, electrical, sprinkler, and other trades.Assemble and hang ductwork using appropriate connection methods (TDC/TDF, slip and drive, flanged, spiral couplings) and seal to the specified SMACNA seal class.Install hangers, trapeze supports, rod, strut, seismic bracing, and roof/wall penetrations, flashings, and curbs.Install air distribution devices and accessories including diffusers, grilles, registers, volume dampers, fire/smoke dampers, access doors, turning vanes, sound attenuators, and flexible duct connections.Install VAV boxes, fan-powered terminals, fan coil units, exhaust fans, louvers, and inline equipment and make final duct connections to air handlers, rooftop units, and other equipment.Perform duct leakage testing and support test, adjust, and balance (TAB) and commissioning activities.Maintain a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail on all installed work.Sheetmetal FabricationRead shop drawings and fabricate fittings, transitions, offsets, elbows, plenums, and custom sheetmetal components in the shop or field.Operate sheetmetal shop equipment including shears, brakes, rollers, notchers, Pittsburgh lock formers, TDC/TDF machines, and plasma cutters safely and accurately.Perform field modifications to ductwork and fittings to resolve conflicts and fit-up issues.Fabricate and install flashings, counterflashing, pans, guards, and miscellaneous sheetmetal.Take field measurements and prepare accurate cut lists and fabrication requests.Service, Repair & RetrofitTroubleshoot airflow, noise, and distribution issues related to ductwork and air devices.Repair, reseal, reline, and replace existing ductwork and accessories on renovation and service work.Assist with duct cleaning support work, equipment change-outs, and connection of replacement equipment to existing systems.Complete work documentation accurately and professionally.Identify and communicate potential system deficiencies or concerns.Project SupportRead and interpret blueprints, specifications, submittals, and coordinated shop drawings.Coordinate work activities with Superintendents, Project Managers, and other trades.Maintain accurate material and fitting inventories, track deliveries, and communicate shortages.Assist in project punch list completion and closeout activities.Maintain productivity standards while ensuring quality workmanship.Support project schedules and milestone completion requirements.Safety ResponsibilitiesFollow all OSHA, company, and customer safety requirements.Utilize personal protective equipment properly, including cut-resistant gloves and eye protection when handling sheetmetal.Maintain clean and organized work areas and shop spaces.Participate in toolbox talks and safety meetings.Identify and report unsafe conditions immediately.Protect company tools, equipment, and assets.Promote a culture of safety and accountability on every project.Apprentice Development & MentorshipWork directly with YouthForce Apprentices to teach sheetmetal trade skills, safety practices, tool identification, layout, fabrication, hanging methods, sealing, and jobsite expectations.Serve as a positive role model through professionalism, work ethic, attitude, and craftsmanship.Assist the Superintendent in training and developing less experienced employees.Demonstrate patience and a willingness to explain duct design concepts, SMACNA standards, and installation procedures.Encourage apprentices to learn while maintaining safe and productive work practices.Help create a learning environment that supports apprentice growth and long-term success.Teach proper tool usage, material handling, fabrication and installation techniques, and trade best practices.Reinforce AOTCS values and expectations through daily interactions with apprentices.Leadership ExpectationsTake ownership of assigned tasks and responsibilities.Support the Superintendent in achieving project goals.Assist with crew coordination when directed.Lead by example in productivity, quality, safety, and professionalism.Help maintain positive morale and teamwork among field personnel.Support the development of future mechanics and field leaders.QualificationsMinimum 4 years of commercial or industrial sheetmetal/ductwork experience preferred.Strong working knowledge of SMACNA duct construction standards, pressure classes, seal classes, and hanger/support requirements.Experience with layout, fabrication, hanging, and sealing of rectangular, round, spiral, and double-wall duct systems.Experience installing dampers, air devices, VAV/terminal units, and making equipment connections.Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, coordinated shop drawings, and specifications.Proficient with sheetmetal hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.Ability to take accurate field measurements and communicate fabrication needs.Strong problem-solving abilities and ability to resolve field conflicts.Experience with welding (MIG/TIG/spot) or grease duct fabrication a plus.OSHA 10 Certification preferred.Aerial lift and scissor lift certification preferred.Valid driver's license required.Physical RequirementsAbility to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts and work at heights.Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds and handle large, awkward duct sections with assistance.Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, bending, climbing, reaching overhead, and lifting.Ability to work in attics, crawlspaces, ceiling plenums, rooftops, and mechanical rooms.Performance ExpectationsA successful Sheetmetal/Ductwork Mechanic:Produces high-quality, code-compliant duct installations with minimal supervision.Maintains productivity and efficiency on assigned tasks.Works safely and professionally at all times.Supports project schedules and company
