The Division publishes 80+ high‑quality peer‑reviewed journals covering the breadth of chemistry and allied fields, as well as numerous other high‑quality products and services of benefit to the global community. The Division has US‑based facilities in Washington, D.C. and Columbus, OH, as well as worldwide operations in a growing number of international locations under ACS International, Ltd. (ACSI) including but not limited to the UK, Singapore, China, and India. Within the Publications Division, Global Technology Services (GTS) is tasked with providing all required technological support for the publishing activities of the ACS. The primary verticals in the GTS infrastructure include: Customer Engagement, Innovation Enablement, Business Operations and Administration, Foundational & Technology Operations, Strategy & Execution, Publishing Operations & Business Systems, and Data Engineering. This position will reside within the Product Development vertical and will report to the Senior Technology Manager. Position Summary As a Sr Cloud Engineer/Architect at ACS, you will be instrumental in implementing and managing cloud solutions. This role demands a profound understanding of cloud services, especially Amazon Web Services (AWS), and will involve design and hands‑on implementation with a small team. Your expertise will be critical in developing and managing a cloud‑based infrastructure that supports our extensive range of scientific and scholarly publications, national conferences, and other services. Technical Skills Proficiency in AWS Cloud Platforms: expertise in major cloud platforms like AWS, with an understanding of core services such as computing, storage, and databases. Linux Fundamentals: solid understanding of Linux basics. Networking and Virtualization: knowledge of networking concepts and virtualization technologies. Security and Compliance: understanding of cloud security best practices and compliance requirements. Automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC): skills in tools like Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, and Azure Resource Manager. Containerization and Orchestration: familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes. Programming and Scripting: proficiency in Python, Java, or Bash. Database Management: understanding of different database services and management techniques. Monitoring, Logging, and Cost Optimization: skills in monitoring and logging tools, and strategies for cost optimization. Cost Rationalization: ability to review infrastructure and services and reduce cloud footprint costs. Soft Skills Problem‑Solving: ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues quickly and efficiently. Communication: strong communication skills to collaborate with teams and explain technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders. Continuous Learning: commitment to staying updated with the latest technologies. Project Management: skills in managing projects, timelines, and resources effectively. Position Accountabilities Minimum 10+ years of cloud engineering/development experience. Plan, design, explain, and anticipate impact of cloud services. Implement and manage cloud solutions in AWS using cloud‑native solutions and optimizations. Own provision of cloud services and products; develop and manage infrastructure automation focusing on scalability and security. Collaborate with software and AI engineering teams to meet project acceptance criteria, support continuous integration and delivery, and mentor junior staff members. Design, develop, and manage dev, test, and production environments, ensuring robust software configuration management throughout the application development lifecycle. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams in an Agile setting to provide architecture support on AWS. Infrastructure Utilize Terraform and other IaC tools to automate and manage cloud infrastructure. Develop and maintain an IaC CI/CD pipeline via tools such as Brainboard, integrating with GitHub. Work with serverless computing frameworks on AWS to enhance application scalability and efficiency. Kubernetes & Container Platform Operations Implement, scale, and upgrade AWS EKS clusters. Manage workloads, node groups, network flows, and cluster security. Develop containerization strategies using Docker, EKS, GitHub Actions, and ArgoCD. Extensive experience in implementing AWS EKS clusters, managing scaling, and configuring subnets and gateways; Linux experience is a plus. Security, IAM & Compliance Build IAM roles, SSO, SCPs, and permission boundaries. Implement security guardrails. Manage secrets using AWS Secrets Manager and SSM. Ensure compliance alignment. Data, Storage & Backup Strategy S3 lifecycle and replication design. EBS, EFS, RDS/Aurora usage patterns. Backups, snapshots, restore testing, and DR runbooks. For this role, we prefer candidates in U.S. offices and will need to work extensively with teams in the UK and India time zones. Travel as required. This role can be based in our Washington, D.C. or Columbus, OH offices. For D.C., compensation ranges between $144,000 and $195,000 per year. For OH, compensation ranges between $130,000 and $176,000 per year.
