Physical Therapist II - Outpatient

Job Overview At Houston Methodist, the Physical Therapist II (PT II) position is responsible for evaluating and developing the therapy plan of care for a broad range of diagnoses and acuities. This position may specialize in care for certain complex patient types, through advanced training and education. As an experienced therapist, the PT II provides education to patients, patient’s family members, and/or caregivers, and collaborates with other interprofessional team members for problem resolution and achievement of identified patient specific goals. As a member of the interprofessional care team, the PT II delivers exceptional patient care with adherence to safety standards and guidelines to ensure optimal patient safety, customer service, and optimum patient outcomes. The PT II serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff, including other therapists, technicians, and may act as a clinical resource to students and clinical fellows. The PT II also assists with collection of quality metrics and analytics, with development of best practices and process improvement initiatives, as designated. Uses therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families and interprofessional care team; actively communicates and reports pertinent patient care information. Teaches and provides guidance to nursing and support staff; orients new team members, assists with precepting students and clinical fellows; uses peer‑to‑peer accountability to improve department score for employee engagement. Performs complete and comprehensive evaluation of patients across a broad range of diagnosis and acuities to identify patient’s level of function and determine the treatment plan; develops and implements physical therapy treatment plans for complex patient populations. Provides education to patients and caregivers, evaluates understanding, and adapts teaching methods; serves as resource to clinical fellows and nursing in teaching best practices. Collaborates and communicates with the healthcare team about modifications to patient’s treatment plan, progress, and discharge planning; advocates on behalf of patients/families to resolve clinical and ethical concerns. Balances and adjusts workload to result in optimum patient care and outcome; initiates improvements for department score on patient satisfaction. Assesses patients regularly, monitors progress, modifies goals and plan as indicated; recognizes complications and proactively addresses them. Provides oversight of physical therapy‑related activities, and adjusts plans to improve quality and maintain safety. Identifies opportunities for corrective action, assists in process improvement, and contributes to meeting department and hospital targets for quality and safety; identifies practice improvements with evidence‑based research and aids development of treatment protocols. Maintains accurate documentation and enters charges for services; uses resources efficiently to maximize utilization of time and equipment; manages time effectively, prioritizes daily tasks, and meets productivity standards. Initiates innovative solutions through evidence‑based practice and performance improvement projects; participates in department projects and hospital committees; engages in teaching and community service opportunities. Identifies areas for innovation, efficiency and improvement using evidence‑based literature; assists higher level PTs with program development; seeks self‑development and updates personal development plan. Qualifications Graduate of a physical therapy education program approved by the credentialing body. Two years of experience as a Physical Therapist or completion of a Houston Methodist or comparable residency program. BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA). PT – State licensure in Texas; compact license acceptable within 90 days. Knowledge and Abilities Essential clinical skills performed with competence; ongoing assessments and performance evaluations. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary for essential functions. Effective communication with patients, physicians, families, and coworkers with a customer‑service focus. Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills. Increasing expertise in clinical skills for specific patient populations. Interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills; ability to function independently. Sound judgment in interactions with healthcare team, physicians, and patients’ families. Proficient computer skills and knowledge of rehabilitation equipment. Professional competence in selection, evaluation, and utilization of treatment plans for complex populations.
