Registered Veterinary Technician - Oncology

Position Summary The Oncology Veterinary Technician plays a critical role in supporting the Oncology service by providing skilled technical nursing care, assisting with diagnostics, treatments, and serving as a compassionate liaison between the medical team and pet owners. This role requires strong technical ability, attention to detail, empathy, and excellent communication skills. Key Responsibilities Patient Care & Nursing Assist with oncology appointments, diagnostics, and treatments including chemotherapy administration under veterinarian supervision Prepare, calculate, administer, and document chemotherapy while following safety protocols Place and maintain IV catheters, collect blood and urine samples, and monitor patients during treatments Monitor patients for adverse reactions and promptly report concerns to the veterinarian Induce, monitor, and recover patients under anesthesia according to VOSC protocols Provide supportive care, pain management assistance, and comfort measures for oncology patients Client Communication & Education Educate clients on treatment plans, chemotherapy safety at home, medications, and follow-up care Answer client questions with empathy and professionalism, reinforcing doctor instructions Assist with discharge instructions and coordinate ongoing care and recheck appointments Technical & Clinical Support Perform laboratory procedures (CBCs, chemistry panels, urinalysis, cytology prep) Assist with imaging procedures and staging diagnostics as needed Maintain accurate medical records and treatment logs Ensure compliance with OSHA, chemotherapy safety, and hospital protocols Hospital & Team Support Maintain chemotherapy preparation areas, treatment rooms, and equipment Assist with inventory management of oncology medications and supplies Collaborate closely with oncologist, technicians, assistants, and client service representatives Support a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment Qualifications Required Current Colorado state registration as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is required. A specialty certification (VTS) in Oncology is a plus. Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or Alternate track necessary to obtain CO RVT credentials through DORA A minimum of 2+ years of experience as a credentialed veterinary technician. Experience within a specialty, emergency, or university hospital setting is highly preferred. Proficiency in advanced nursing skills, phlebotomy, catheter placement, accurate dose calculations, and an aptitude for learning and using specialized medical equipment is essential. Soft Skills Exceptional attention to detail and strong critical-thinking skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex medical information clearly and compassionately. Strong organizational and time-management abilities to handle a dynamic caseload. A calm and professional demeanor in high-stress situations. Physical Demands Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds independently (and over 40 lbs with assistance), stand for long periods, and perform physical tasks necessary for patient care. Compassionate and calm demeanor, especially with critically ill patients and emotional clients. Willingness to learn and grow within a specialty service. Preferred Prior oncology or specialty medicine experience. Experience handling and administering chemotherapy. Familiarity with oncology safety standards and protocols.
