The hourly base rate may vary within the anticipated range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include commission (annual, monthly, etc.) and/or an incentive program. Job Summary The Shop Trailer Technician I will be responsible for performing DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light repairs, and other duties as assigned such as trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, and brake chambers. The technician can perform more advanced repairs under the supervision of a higher‑level technician. A successful technician complies with all company policies and achieves high level performance metrics. Duties Always follows and complies with safe operating practices and procedures. Independently determines parts required for each job and interacts with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them. Maintains a clean and safe work environment and assists in cleanup at the end of each day. Applies knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform the job. Works with the Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations. Manages concurrent assigned tasks, making effective judgments as to prioritizing work and time allocations. Acts with integrity, demonstrates honesty, keeps commitments, and behaves consistently with confidentiality and ethical standards. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance ("PM"), DOT inspections and follows up on repairs on light, medium and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment. Performs routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment. Uses hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts and jacks. Documents and uploads pictures of work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using company‑issued devices or the Karmak application. Accurately completes DOT forms and all other required documentation in a timely fashion. Maintains a high level of productivity and works within or close to most standard repair times. Communicates with the shop manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings. Performs work in compliance with organizational safety, health and environmental policies, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA and DOT. Participates in and completes all in‑company required safety training. Maintains shop‑assigned service trucks, conducting safety checks and daily pre/post‑trip inspections. Performs minor adjustments and repairs on various trailer equipment and systems, including brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers and steering systems. Adheres to company policies, processes and procedures. Requirements High School Diploma/GED and up to 2 years of experience in a related field. Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties. OEM training and certifications are preferred. Participate in and complete all in‑company required training. Must pass a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical. Current and valid DOT medical card with more than four months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical. Safe drivers needed and a 3‑year MVR review required; holds a valid state‑of‑residence driver’s license and can obtain and maintain a Driver Qualification File. Required Certifications or Obtained Within 18 Months ASE T8 (PMI) certification. Preferred Certifications ASE 608/609 certification. Skills & Abilities Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including design, usage, repair and maintenance. Ability to understand implications of new information for current and future problem‑solving and decision‑making. Ability to lift, bend, climb, stand and walk for long periods and perform moderately heavy labor. Ability to exert oneself physically over long periods without tiring, including repetitive tasks. Ability to accurately judge distance between objects. Ability to communicate information succinctly and organize information. Engages in effective two‑way communication.
