This position is part of the Painting Department and is responsible for cleaning, preparing, and painting metal surfaces on machines and parts. The role requires operating heavy equipment, applying various coatings, maintaining tools, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Position Summary Prepares metal surfaces for painting by removing dirt, grease, scale, and other contaminants. Masks and tapes areas not requiring painting, applies paint to interior and exterior surfaces, mixes materials according to product data sheets, inspects painted areas, and performs touch‑up work. Operates heavy‑duty and high‑reach equipment and uses auto‑body repair techniques. Maintains inventory, records, and works with shop housekeeping standards. Guides and mentors technicians. Essential Functions Set up tools and equipment to clean and prepare machines or parts for painting. Set up tools and equipment to mix and paint materials, applying synthetic enamels, acrylic enamels, urethanes, and CARC coating as specified. Operate heavy equipment for movement around yard or shop and high‑reach equipment to apply coating in difficult areas. Maintain tooling and apply films and decals. Sandblast, prep, tape, paint, and decal heavy equipment, trucks, and trailers. Use auto‑body techniques (Bondo, fiberglass, SMC plastic repair). Check and maintain inventory of paint and supplies. Perform housekeeping and general cleaning during and after work. Adhere to state and local regulations and painting permits. Maintain timely paint records (daily, monthly, quarterly, yearly). Assist team members during downtime. Mentor, train, and guide less experienced technicians. Perform additional duties as directed by supervisor. Education, Experience, and Skills Required High school diploma or equivalent. 1 to 3 years of experience with hand brush and spray‑painting or SSPC C-12 certification. Knowledge of surface preparation, paint mixing, and product data sheets. Ability to read and understand product data sheets. Ability to identify paint application requirements and equipment. Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and on any shift. Strong attention to detail and ability to work within deadlines in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to work well with others. Valid California Class C driver’s license with a clean driving record. Physical Demands Requires walking, handling, lifting (up to 50 lbs), reaching, stooping, standing, climbing, hearing, speaking, and occasional sitting or lying positions. Work may take place on uneven terrain, outdoors, and in noisy environments. Environmental Conditions Constant or intermittent noise. Outdoor work with temperature and weather variations.
