This is a senior underwriting opportunity focused on complex, high-net-worth life insurance risks across the Canadian market. You'll apply advanced underwriting expertise to deliver sound, competitive, and customer-focused risk decisions. The role combines deep medical and financial risk assessment with strong relationship management and commercial awareness. You'll collaborate closely with sales teams, head office partners, and external stakeholders to support business growth. Your judgment will directly influence customer outcomes while maintaining rigorous standards around risk, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance. The position also offers opportunities to mentor colleagues, contribute to process improvements, and represent the organization externally. This is a fully remote role designed for an experienced underwriting professional who wants to help shape the future of insurance excellence.

Accountabilities

• Assess and classify complex life insurance risks in accordance with established underwriting philosophies, standards, and risk management practices.
• Provide high-quality, competitive underwriting decisions for high-net-worth customers while balancing customer needs, business objectives, and risk considerations.
• Collaborate closely with sales teams and head office colleagues to support new business opportunities and deliver effective underwriting solutions.
• Build and maintain strong, productive relationships with internal and external partners.
• Deliver a consistently high-quality customer experience by making interactions clear, responsive, and meaningful.
• Ensure underwriting decisions comply with applicable consumer protection laws and regulations, particularly those relating to risk classification, confidentiality, and disclosure.
• Analyze and resolve complex underwriting issues and recommend improvements to processes, procedures, and working practices.
• Contribute to a growth-oriented, service-focused underwriting culture that supports both business development and long-term client relationships.
• Participate in co-signing, referral reviews, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing activities as appropriate.
• Support external presentations, panels, conferences, and other opportunities to represent underwriting expertise and industry knowledge.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of professional underwriting experience, with substantial experience handling complex life insurance risks.
• Proven experience in the high-net-worth insurance market.
• Life insurance signing authority of CAD $5 million or more.
• Strong sales and relationship-oriented mindset, with the ability to support business acquisition and continued growth in a competitive market.
• Working toward or completion of professional designations such as FALU, FLMI, or ACS.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology and concepts, including physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, diagnostic imaging, testing, and treatments.
• Strong understanding of non-medical factors affecting mortality, including hazardous occupations, sports, avocations, and lifestyle risks.
• Experience interpreting financial reports and familiarity with anti-money laundering practices.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical, negotiation, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with sales, underwriting, and other business partners.

Preferred qualifications:

• Bilingual English/French capability is a strong asset; candidates based in Québec will be required to communicate in both languages to support clients across Canadian provinces.
• CAD $100,000+ underwriting authority.
• University or college degree in a relevant discipline such as medical sciences, research, finance, or a related field.
• Strong negotiation skills and commercial acumen.
• Interest and experience in representing underwriting expertise through external presentations, panels, conferences, or industry events.
• Experience with co-signing, referral reviews, mentoring, or similar technical leadership responsibilities.
