Medical Transcriptionist II-Music Transcriptionist II

Summary

This position supports an active neuroscience research program investigating how the human brain processes and perceives music and other complex auditory stimuli. The successful candidate will work closely with research staff to produce accurate, detailed digital representations of audio stimuli used in patient-facing experiments. The role requires a strong combination of musical ear training, theory knowledge, and proficiency with production and notation software to transcribe a diverse repertoire of recorded audio with a high degree of accuracy and consistency.

Job Duties

• The core weekly responsibility involves listening to audio recordings of songs selected for use in neuroscience experiments and producing accurate digital sheet music representations using notation software (e.g., MuseScore, or equivalent). 
• Transcribes melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, articulation, and tempo markings from audio recordings or reference tracks.
• Produces export-ready notation files in standard formats compatible with research analysis pipelines (.xlsx, MIDI, or Python and MATLAB-readable data formats).
• Organizes and maintains a structured digital archive of completed transcriptions linked to their corresponding audio stimuli.
• Coordinates with data analysts to confirm that exported file formats and event annotations meet downstream processing requirements.
• Produces MIDI renderings of transcriptions to allow programmatic extraction of note-level features (pitch, duration, velocity, onset time) for computational analysis.
• Assists in the development of a standardized transcription protocol and style guide to ensure consistency across all stimuli in the experiment battery.
• Flags audio stimuli that present transcription ambiguities (e.g., microtonal passages, highly improvisatory sections, lo-fi or degraded recordings) and proposing notation solutions.
• Supports occasional ad hoc requests such as generating simplified or modified versions of stimuli for pilot testing or control conditions.
• Adheres to research data handling and confidentiality procedures as required by institutional policy and any applicable IRB protocols.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Two years of relevant experience.
