School Nurse - LVNProvide direct health services to students and staff as delegated by RN Supervisor or Nursing Coordinator; promote preventive health practices for studentsQualifications:Graduate of an accredited vocational nursing education programValid LVN license to practice vocational nursing in the state of TexasCurrent CPR certificationCertification by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision, hearing and spinal screeningCurrent automatic external defibrillator (AED) and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificatesSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defectsAbility to implement policies and proceduresKnowledge of basic first aidProficient keyboarding and file maintenance skillsAbility to write routine reports and correspondenceStrong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skillsExperience:Two years nursing experienceMajor Responsibilities and DutiesNursing ServicesProvide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to district policy and proceduresServe as health advocate for studentsNotify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached)Administer medications according to district policy and proceduresPerform screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of Health, Texas Education Agency, and district policy; make appropriate referrals as necessaryParticipate in the promotion of preventive health practices as directed by RN Supervisor or CoordinatorProvide health counseling and instruction on an individual basisServe as health liaison between school physicians, parents, and communityAssess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and the medical and health care community as neededParticipate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, child abuse situations, and school committeesMake home visits concerning health problems as necessary with permission of principalCommunicate regularly with principal and lead nurse regarding health services issuesReview, evaluate and update immunization records on an on-going basisMaintain AED equipment at campus/buildingDocument nursing interventions using accepted abbreviations and following district protocol for appropriate record keepingCompile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required by the state and the districtRequisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventoryComply with policies established by federal and state law, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the area of health servicesReport potential health and safety hazards to principalMaintain current certifications in CPR, vision and hearing screening and spinal screeningDemonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsibleComply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulationsAdhere to the district's safety policies and proceduresMaintain confidentiality in the conduct of district businessMust be able to perform the essential functions of walking and interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned (classroom or office setting)Demonstrate regular and prompt attendanceOther duties as assignedSupervisory Responsibilities: NoneMental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripheralsPosture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twistingMotion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extensionLifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting nonambulatory studentsEnvironment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseasesMental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
