Position Summary Nurse Extern Med Surg Float at Banner Health, Glendale, AZ. This role is designed for nursing students graduating in 12 months or less (Junior or Senior). The extern will work under the supervision of an RN preceptor on day shift and gain hands‑on experience in a Med/Surg float unit. Responsibilities Assess patients, administer medications, adjust IV pump rates/devices, parenteral fluids, blood products or IV flushes, initiate, titrate, and discontinue oxygen, and perform basic data collection in an EMR. Practice any skill for which the extern has received didactic and clinical instruction and can provide evidence of a skill checklist from an accredited nursing program. Spend time with the clinical case manager, observe procedures, and participate in activities relevant to the patient population. Work a minimum of 12 hours per month and no more than 20 hours per week. Undergo orientation in the Fall of 2025 at Banner Health’s Banner Thunderbird Medical Center (BTMC) and Banner Children’s Hospital at Thunderbird. Follow safety standards, comply with education/training requirements, and perform all functions per policies, regulations, and accreditation requirements. Collaborate with other disciplines and interact with physicians, patients, families, and external contacts to support patient care. Perform other nursing duties within the approved policies of the facility. Qualifications Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program and within one year of graduation. Must be able to graduate on the initially anticipated graduation date. Current BLS certification. Must be able to pass Nursing State Boards within 90 days after graduation (or within an additional 60 days if a second attempt). Will work a minimum of 12 hours per month; cannot exceed 20 hours per week. Eligibility for transition to New Grad RN role after successful completion of the externship.
