Medical Scientist, Cytology

Bayside Health was formed following the merger of Alfred Health, Bass Coast Health, Gippsland Southern Health Service, Kooweerup Regional Health Service and Peninsula Health on 1 January 2026. Employment status: Permanent Full time (80 hours per fortnight) Grade 1/2 Scientist (RX1- RY7) Rotation between Alfred Hospital and Footscray Hospital Great staff benefits! 5 weeks annual leave and salary packaging The Department As part of the Department of Health’s initiative to return public pathology to public hospitals and ensure consistent, accessible care for all Victorians, Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a Shared Pathology Service. Pathology services are provided from two main laboratories (The Alfred in Prahran and Monash Medical Centre in Clayton), and six branch laboratories (Casey Hospital, Dandenong Hospital, Moorabbin Hospital, Sandringham Hospital, Wonthaggi Hospital and Victorian Heart Hospital). In addition, there are 23 collection centres and rooms spread across South East Melbourne and South Gippsland, with the furthest one located in Yarram. The Shared Pathology Service is currently planning to expand services to Western Health by February 2026. The Anatomical Pathology Unit comprises of Histopathology and Cytopathology. The role will be based in the Cytology. The Role The role will require participation in a rotating roster, Monday to Friday between the hours of 08:00 to 18:00 hours. Work as a team member in the Cytopathology section in the provision of diagnostic laboratory services Perform screening of non-gyn samples Perform rapid onsite assessment at radiological guided FNA, EBUS and EUS procedures Perform primary screening and issue screening reports for pathologists Experience And Qualifications Required Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine with a major in Cytology (or recognised equivalent) is required. A Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) from an Australian or New Zealand University is preferred. Specific post-graduate qualifications in cytopathology such as CTASC and/or CTIAC or verifiable progression towards such qualifications. Previous experience with primary screening of non-gynaecological cytology. Able to communicate well both Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills. Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Class C Drivers licence and willingness to travel to the various WH and Prahran sites as needed.
