POSITION OVERVIEW The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall direction, leadership, and administration of the clinical laboratory. RESPONSIBILITIES Maintain the clinical laboratory in a manner that is safe and compliant with OSHA standards and applicable local regulations. Ensure that the environmental conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees and patients are protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards. Assist Principal Investigators, Site Director, and Clinical Research Coordinators with logistics and planning of all study procedures. Initiate quality-control measures and monitor work quality for compliance with laboratory standards. Evaluate existing systems and processes and develop corrective action plans for service/quality trends identified. Initiate changes and monitor improvement. Purchase supplies for the laboratory. Recommend procurement of new laboratory equipment and monitor maintenance/repair needs of existing equipment. Monitor specimen storage to ensure sample integrity. Record and report test results promptly, accurately, and proficiently. Ensure that an approved procedure manual is available to all personnel responsible for any aspect of the laboratory process. Perform clinical tasks including, but not limited to, vital signs, height and weight, ECG, phlebotomy, specimen packing and shipping. Manage laboratory and protocol related training for study start-up, Site Initiation Visits, protocol amendments, manual amendments, and others. Participate in creating and maintaining staffing plans for the laboratory team, including making recommendations for additional staff when needed. Assist in identifying and securing, through hiring and interview processes, candidates for open roles in the laboratory department. Perform other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; coaching and mentoring employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the assigned department(s). KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Strong attention to detail. Highly organized. Excellent critical thinking skills. Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to multi‑task. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively (written and verbal). Disciplined in following safety and scientific techniques. Ability to use lab equipment with accuracy, precision, and efficiency. Proficiency with a mechanical pipettor. Familiarity with how to safely transport hazardous materials in accordance with IATA training and Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR). QUALIFICATIONS Education Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or related field preferred. Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certificate preferred. International Air Transport Association (IATA) certificate preferred. OSHA training certificate preferred. Experience Four to six years of experience in a laboratory environment with similar functions.
