In most cases, these procedures require only a small incision to introduce a catheter. Most procedures don't require general anesthesia and require very little time to perform. In many cases, patients can go home the same day or are hospitalized for only one night following the procedure, instead of the longer hospital stay required by more invasive surgical techniques. Recovery time is often shorter as well, since most interventional cardiology procedures are now performed through a small artery in the wrist which eliminates the need to lie flat after the procedure.
