Position Summary

The Kress embodies the culture, spirit, and traditions of downtown El Paso while offering a work environment focused on the overall employee experience. The Merchandise Sales Associate creates a welcoming retail experience by engaging guests, selling Kress-branded apparel and souvenirs, processing transactions accurately, and maintaining an attractive, organized, and fully stocked merchandise area.

This role combines proactive guest service, product knowledge, visual merchandising, inventory support, cash handling, and loss-prevention awareness. The ideal team member is outgoing, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable turning casual interest into a positive purchase experience while supporting the overall energy and operations of Kress Food Market.

Key Responsibilities

Guest Service & Merchandise Sales
• Greet and engage guests in a warm, approachable manner and provide attentive service throughout the shopping experience.
• Actively promote and sell Kress-branded apparel, caps, souvenirs, and other merchandise by helping guests select appropriate sizes, styles, and product combinations.
• Answer questions about pricing, sizing, materials, product care, availability, promotions, and store policies accurately and professionally.
• Handle guest concerns, returns, and exchanges courteously and within established authority; escalate unusual situations to management.

Point-of-Sale & Cash Handling
• Operate the point-of-sale system and process cash, credit, mobile, return, and exchange transactions accurately and according to company procedures.
• Maintain an accurate cash drawer, complete opening and closing counts, and promptly report shortages, overages, or transaction concerns.
• Protect cash, keys, equipment, and confidential transaction information from loss, theft, misuse, or damage.

Visual Merchandising & Inventory Support
• Keep merchandise displays clean, organized, fully stocked, and visually appealing throughout the shift.
• Fold, size, tag, arrange, and rotate apparel and merchandise to support presentation standards and product availability.
• Monitor inventory levels and communicate low-stock, fast-moving, damaged, missing, or incorrectly priced items to management.
• Assist with receiving, inspecting, tagging, stocking, and organizing incoming merchandise shipments.
• Participate in cycle counts, physical inventory, stock reconciliation, and investigation of inventory discrepancies as directed.

Safety, Teamwork & Business Needs
• Maintain a clean, safe, uncluttered sales area and immediately address or report spills, damaged fixtures, trip hazards, or other safety concerns.
• Coordinate professionally with Kress employees, tenants, vendors, security, and management to support events, traffic flow, and the overall guest experience.
• Maintain reliable attendance, punctuality, and readiness to work assigned shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to support Kress Food Market operations and guest experience.

Qualifications

Education, Experience & Skills
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Previous retail, cashier, sales, hospitality, or customer-service experience preferred but not required.
• Friendly and professional communication skills with the confidence to approach guests and recommend products.
• Basic math skills and the ability to handle cash, make change, and reconcile transactions accurately.
• Comfort using a point-of-sale system, payment terminal, email, and related retail technology after training.
• Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills are helpful but not required unless designated for a specific business need.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and events.

Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during assigned shifts.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull merchandise boxes and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds, with assistance or equipment when appropriate.
• Ability to bend, reach, twist, squat, and perform repetitive folding, tagging, stocking, and display-maintenance tasks.
• Ability to work safely in a fast-paced, high-traffic food hall and retail environment.
