NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center in eastern Long Island providing comprehensive care. The hospital hosts the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion, and a Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center. It also has a designated Primary Stroke Center and multiple outpatient sites such as wound care, hemodialysis, and specialty offices. Position Summary We are seeking a Registered Nurse for Psychiatric Access (Full‑Time, Night shift 7p‑7:30a, Alt Weekend) who will execute professional nursing care in accordance with physician treatment plans. The candidate will assess patient needs, develop and implement care plans, document progress, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, direct other nursing staff, and participate in orientation of new employees. Job Responsibilities The registered nurse collects patient health data through patient, family, and other health care providers. Performs initial assessment based on patient presentation. Records relevant data on the nursing component of the Interdisciplinary Admission Assessment. Demonstrates awareness of special needs of each age group or culture served and of patients with disabilities. Performs ongoing assessments as established by department policy and as warranted by patient response. Incorporates discharge planning into the admission process. Analyzes assessment data in determining problem identification and establishes expected individualized outcomes. Combines theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise to anticipate and plan for identified patient and family care needs. Identifies actual or potential problems validated with patient, family, and other health care providers. Identifies cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects of patient/family dynamics related to care. Recognizes patient's comfort/pain management needs that may impact the plan of care and desired outcome. Identifies any knowledge deficits for the patient and/or family. Communicates expected outcomes to patient, family, and health care providers to promote continuity of care. Develops a plan of care prescribing interventions to attain expected outcomes. Collaborates with patient, family, and appropriate health care providers to develop the plan of care. Formulates a family‑centered plan of care consistent with assessment and physician's treatment plan; integrates cultural, ethnic and spiritual aspects. Incorporates teaching and learning principles based on identified learning needs and developmental level. Assists patient and family in securing services to address health‑related needs. Communicates the plan of care to patient, family, and other health care providers. Documents the initial plan of care and provides updates as required. Establishes realistic goals, sets appropriate priorities, and uses time efficiently. Implements the plan of care and performs patient monitoring. Adapts nursing procedures to meet individual patient needs. Provides education to patient and family using educational assessment. Recognizes hazards to patient safety and takes action to maintain a safe environment. Collaborates with other team members to implement interventions. Assigns or delegates tasks as defined by state nurse practice act and caregiver knowledge and skills. Demonstrates knowledge regarding drug administration, incompatibilities, contraindications and adverse effects; seeks resources when uncertain. Complies with medication policy for transcription, verification, administration, and documentation. Evaluates patient progress toward attainment of outcomes. Documents patient response to interventions and revisions to the plan of care. Uses ongoing assessment data to revise expected outcomes and patient plan of care as needed. Identifies barriers to achieving desired outcomes and utilizes resources to diminish negative impact. Communicates with patient, family, and other health care providers in evaluation process. Provides care that demonstrates ethical beliefs and respect for patient rights. Participates in activities supporting customer satisfaction. Participates in evaluation of quality and effectiveness of nursing practices and supports improvement measures. Maintains effective interactions with unit staff and other departments. Interacts with and contributes to professional development of peers and health care providers. Act as facilitator regarding patient care issues. Seeks out and utilizes Nurse Manager or Nursing Administrative Supervisor for assistance. Accepts feedback from peers and management for improved patient care and unit functioning. Engages in performance appraisal identifying strengths and development areas. Collaborates with management to improve care environment for patients, families and personnel. Demonstrates working knowledge of nursing service policies and procedures. Maintains knowledge base through learning activities such as meetings, education programs, association membership, journal review, or committee participation. Complies with staff meeting attendance requirement. Minimum Qualifications Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of a two‑year training at an accredited School of Nursing. Current New York State license as a Registered Professional Nurse. BLS certification and de‑escalation training. ACLS (ICU, Float pool, Emergency Department). TCAR Certification (SICU, PACU). For Emergency Department: PALS, TNCC within first year. BLS, ACLS, PALS must be through AHA. Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and families, recognizing cultural diversity. Customer service excellence reflected in practice. Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in written format. Analytical ability to assess and develop solutions to clinical situations or unit problems. Maintains knowledge and proficiency in the clinical area and age group served. Ability to frequently lift/carry more than 75 lbs. Ability to frequently push/pull more than 100 lbs. Ability to frequently bend, squat, kneel, climb steps/ladder and reach above shoulders. Required Licenses: Registered Nurse License, NYS. Preferred Qualifications 1 year critical care experience preferred for ASU RN. BSN preferred. PALS preferred. Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia (e.g., CAPA) preferred. 1 year nursing experience in preoperative, perioperative, or post‑anesthesia care preferred. Experience in patient assessment, education, and care planning for pre‑ and post‑operative patients. Prior experience in discharge planning and coordination of perioperative patients. Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems, including documentation of patient assessments, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
