Speech And Language Specialist
Speech-language specialists assess, diagnose, treat, and help prevent speech, language, cognitive, communication, voice, swallowing, fluency, and other related disorders. They develop and implement individualized programs of habilitation of speech, voice, articulation, hearing and language disorders for infants, preschoolers and school age children. Assist students with skills for coping in the mainstreamed educational setting. Complete other related functions as required.
Required License/Certification:
- Valid California driver's license
- Valid California Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential with authorization for Language, Speech and Hearing
Experience And Education:
- Must have passed CBEST
- Possess a Master's degree from an accredited college or university
- Possess or be eligible to possess a valid California teaching credential appropriate to the instructional assignment or eligible to participate in an CTC approved intern program
- Bilingual in English and Spanish desired
Knowledge of:
- Principles and techniques of speech, language, and hearing therapy
- Behavioral management systems and current trends in educational methods for teaching language, speech, and hearing students
- Principles and methods of recognizing, testing, and evaluating language, speech, and hearing students
- Non-verbal communication techniques and systems
- Child growth and development and characteristics of children with speech, language and hearing needs
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults
- Function as a productive team member and interact positively with staff members, community agencies, and parents
- Maintain confidentiality of information pertaining to students and their families
- Respect and show appropriate consideration for age, gender, cultural/linguistic background and related factors when providing services
- Prepare, implement, and monitor effective Individualized Education Plans, including the ability to prepare plans using an online or computerized IEP system
- Speak and write effectively
- Effectively implement the California Standards for the Teaching Profession competencies
Essential Functions:
- Follow state mandated and department guidelines for referral, assessment, and placement of students in speech and language therapy
- Identify pupils with speech, language, and/or hearing problems through screening and diagnostic evaluation
- Determine eligibility for students comprising speech caseload based on state and SELPA eligibility criteria
- Develop an individual education plan with parents for each student based on assessment needs and including annual goals and specific objectives
- Participate in assessment and placement meetings for students referred for special class consideration as appropriate
- Plan, schedule, and implement a therapy program to assist identified students with improvement in speech and language deficit areas
- Confer with parents, classroom teachers, psychologist, school nurse, and other professionals as needed
- Maintain appropriate records on assessment, therapy progress, and IEP timelines for caseload
- Provide information for all district, county, and state reports when requested
- Maintain professional competence through attendance at conferences, workshops, classes, and department meetings
- Establish and maintain communication and rapport with school site staffs. Provide resource information to teachers and parents as needed
- Provide information to children and/or their parents about the Medi-Cal system and where and how to access applications
- Copy and distribute Medi-Cal information to children and their families
- Inform children and /or their parents about medical services available through school or in the local community
- Refer children to medical services covered by Medi-Cal (Part of SST process)
- Provide health-related information to children and/or their parents
- Identify at risk children and families and refer them to the proper agencies for services
- Assist families and student with paperwork necessary to complete Medi-Cal and/or Healthy Families applications
- May provide clerical support for health service
- Implement inclusion and community based activities as appropriate for each student
- Participate in Student Study Team and other committees or site activities, as appropriate
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student files or other relevant material
- Establish and maintain an orderly, attractive, positive, and safe learning environment
- May be required to attend trainings outside the normal workday, locally or out of town
- Perform other duties normally required by certificated employees as adjunct to the regular teaching assignment
Physical Requirements:
- Occasional (less than 25%) Ability to bend and twist, stoop, kneel, run and crawl
- Ability to lift 45 pounds
- Ability to carry 25 pounds
- Sufficient physical and emotional stamina to move quickly on uneven terrain, play yards, and school ground, to push or pull student in wheelchairs or wagons
- Physical agility to effectively restrain student in sometimes hostile situations
- Often (25 50%) Ability to stand for extended periods of time
- Sufficient mobility to travel from site to site and move about an office/classroom
- Very Frequent (76%) Ability to stand and move around a classroom
- Ability to work at a desk, conference table, or in meetings of various configurations
- Ability to see for purposes of reading printed matter and observing students
- Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing so others will be able to clearly understand
- Ability to operate office equipment
- Mental acuity to perform the duties of this position in an accurate, neat, and timely fashion; to make good judgments and decision; and to evaluate the result of decision and judgments

Work Environment:
- Teach at one or more school sites, may also provide supervision in hallways, playground, lunchroom or various locations on campus
- May be required to make home visits, go on field trips or provide community-based instruction
- May serve infants, preschoolers, and special education or alternative education students
