Job Title: Safety Lead
Job Description
This full-time Safety Lead role focuses on promoting a strong safety culture by providing expert guidance in safety, health, work methods, and training across multiple power delivery and utility projects. You will spend extensive time in the field with crews, observing work practices, identifying training needs, delivering hands-on and classroom-style training, and evaluating performance in both simulated and real-world environments. This position is ideal for a safety professional with multiple years of experience, strong presentation skills, and subject matter expertise in safety, training, and quality control within construction, distribution, transmission line, substation, and natural gas/public utility environments.
Responsibilities
- Visit crews in the field regularly to observe work practices and provide on-the-job training and coaching in safety, quality, and work methods.
- Identify areas where additional safety, quality, or work methods training is needed and develop, schedule, and deliver targeted training programs.
- Work closely with Area Supervisors to identify crews requiring further development and create structured plans to address safety, quality, and work method deficiencies.
- Present safety, work methods, and quality training courses in both field and facility settings, ensuring content is clear, engaging, and compliant with relevant standards.
- Evaluate employee and driver performance, providing constructive feedback and documenting strengths, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
- Conduct program-level audits of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs, ensuring adherence to internal policies and regulatory requirements.
- Recognize safety and quality issues in the field, gather and analyze relevant information, seek input from stakeholders, and address root causes with timely and well-communicated decisions.
- Lead teams through change by building consensus where appropriate, making difficult decisions when necessary, and motivating and encouraging others to adopt best practices.
- Provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and mentoring to employees, challenging them to grow, supporting their development, and using mistakes as learning opportunities.
- Set challenging safety and performance goals, prioritize tasks effectively, overcome obstacles, and accept accountability for results.
- Prepare accurate, timely reports and documentation related to safety training, audits, and performance evaluations.
- Communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and in writing, deliver presentations to various audiences, share information and ideas, and demonstrate strong listening skills.
- Support accident, incident, injury, and illness investigations by providing technical assistance, helping to determine causes, and recommending corrective actions.
- Identify and document proper and improper practices on natural gas job sites according to defined audit metrics.
- Coordinate and communicate safety-related information across company and department lines to ensure alignment and consistency in safety practices.
- Minimum of 3 years of verifiable safety experience preferred.
- OSHA 500 certification or other accredited safety certification such as CSP, ASP, OHS, CHST, CSST, or CSHO, and/or a Bachelor’s degree in a safety-related curriculum.
- Strong presentation skills with experience leading regular safety meetings and other trainings.
- Demonstrated experience conducting quality assurance audits in the natural gas and public utility industry.
- Ability to identify and record proper and improper practices on natural gas job sites in alignment with audit metrics.
- Experience providing technical assistance with the investigation of accidents, incidents, injuries, and illnesses.
- Proven ability to coordinate and communicate information across company and department lines.
- Subject matter expertise in safety, training, and quality control within construction and utility environments.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver clear presentations and produce accurate, punctual reports.
- Ability to recognize problems, analyze complex issues, identify root causes, and make timely, well-informed decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to lead through change, build consensus, and motivate and encourage others.
- Experience mentoring and coaching employees, providing feedback, and supporting their professional development.
- Ability to travel regularly to field and project sites as required by the role.
- Experience in safety oversight and training within construction, distribution, transmission line (TLINE), and substation environments.
- Familiarity with EHS program-level audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
- CUSP (Certified Utility Safety Professional) certification is highly valued and will receive elevated consideration.
- Experience working with power delivery projects and utility infrastructure.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple training and audit activities simultaneously.
- Comfort working in dynamic field environments and adapting training approaches to different crews and work conditions.
- Ability to build strong working relationships with supervisors, field crews, and cross-functional teams.
This role is field-based and involves extensive travel to project and construction sites across Texas, particularly within power delivery, natural gas, and public utility environments. Work is primarily performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, and other elements typical of construction job sites.
