Job Overview

The Night ED/ICU Pharmacist plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe, precise, and prompt review, verification, preparation, and distribution of medications for both adult and pediatric patients in emergency and critical care settings during overnight shifts. This position is primarily located in the Emergency Department and follows a 7 on/7 off work schedule.

This pharmacist is accountable for the designated coverage of the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit while also providing support to fellow night-shift pharmacists based on patient needs, workload, and emergencies. The role emphasizes adherence to hospital policies, relevant state and federal regulations, and patient safety standards, while delivering comprehensive clinical and operational pharmacy support to the healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

• Medication Administration: Guides clinical staff to ensure medications are administered safely and accurately. Provides advice on the correct timing, dosage, and route of administration, and addresses any significant adverse reactions or concerns with both patients and healthcare providers.
• Department Goals: Contributes to the achievement of departmental objectives while adhering to policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety regulations. Complies with governmental and accreditation requirements.
• Medication Dispensing: Prepares medications safely using appropriate techniques, ensuring accurate preparation and overseeing non-licensed staff. Labels medications in accordance with hospital policies and regulations, ensuring safe and accurate administration.
• Medication Management: Manages recalled, discontinued, unused, expired, or returned medications according to laws and hospital policies. Ensures timely administration of first doses of therapeutically monitored medications and documents activities for ongoing monitoring.
• Investigational Medications: Adheres to established policies for the management of investigational medications, including their storage, dispensing, labeling, and documentation. Reviews protocols prior to dispensing.
• Monitoring: Responds effectively to actual or potential adverse drug events and medication occurrences, complying with reporting requirements using the Medication Occurrence Reporting System and other relevant platforms.
• Order Verification: Ensures medication orders are complete, accurate, and appropriate for the patient's condition. Reviews orders for appropriateness, including dosage, frequency, and potential interactions.
• Quality Improvement: Engages in multidisciplinary teams focused on quality and service improvement, evaluating the hospital's medication management system for safety enhancements.
• Patient Information Management: Collects and maintains relevant patient information necessary for safe medication management, including demographics, current medications, allergies, and lab values.
• Selection and Procurement: Ensures that medications are selected and procured based on established criteria, demonstrating knowledge of the formulary process and adhering to policies regarding non-formulary medications.
• Medication Storage: Ensures proper storage of medications throughout the hospital, maintaining appropriate conditions for stability and security, particularly for controlled substances.
• Emergency Preparedness: Regularly inspects medication storage areas to ensure emergency medications are available, secure, and in ready-to-administer forms.
• Patient-Brought Medications: Follows hospital policy regarding medications brought in by patients or families, assessing their integrity and determining their appropriateness for use.

Qualifications

• Education: A Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy is required, with a preference for an advanced degree.
• Experience: 1-2 years of clinical hospital pharmacy experience, demonstrating an understanding of pharmaceutical care concepts.
• Licenses and Certifications: A valid pharmacist license in the State of Maryland is required; residency or certification is preferred.
• Skills: Strong verbal and written communication abilities, along with basic computer skills.

Compensation

This position offers a salary range of USD $102,606.00 - USD $196,996.00 per year.
