Explorer Post #411 Explorer Post #411 has been in existence since the mid 1970’s and is open to individuals between the ages of 14½ and 21 years old. The program is designed to expose participants to many aspects of law enforcement and community service, with the city and police department staff committed to helping youth become responsible and contributing members of the community. In addition, this experience brings a feeling of accomplishment and pride to those who participate. The program introduces members to all phases of law enforcement, with instruction provided by police personnel—specifically Explorer Advisors—under the direction of the Chief of Police. A command structure is in place within the post, allowing members to learn and develop leadership and problem‑solving skills. The Volunteer Police Explorer program is intended to provide experience that is a useful addition for future professional employment, and there should be no expectations of future paid employment with the City of Claremont. Position Volunteer in the records bureau, participate in patrol ride‑alongs, and be prepared for call‑outs whenever necessary. Attend weekly meetings at the Claremont Police Department every Tuesday from 5 PM to 7 PM. Attendance is mandatory, and a minimum of 10 service hours per month is required. Respond to call‑outs for emergencies—including lost/missing persons, area searches, weapons, major traffic accidents, traffic control, weather‑related emergencies, and disasters—once approved by advisor staff or the on‑duty Watch Commander. Complete Academy training in July (typically a week‑long, live‑in style academy). Provide police presence at special events (parades, carnivals, city events, etc.), assist police officers during DUI checkpoints, assist police personnel with departmental operations, interact with the public, perform crime scene searches, missing person searches, translations (if applicable), and police vehicle service. Qualifications Must be between 14½ and 21 years of age. Parental support is required if under age 18. Maintain outstanding citizenship, motivation, and personal character. Good school attendance and a minimum 2.0 GPA or “C” average if under the age of 18. No drug or alcohol use. Strict adherence to all federal, state, and local laws, and the policies of the City of Claremont and the Claremont Police Explorer Policy Manual. Uniforms Uniform shirts with patches, uniform pants, a black basket‑weave belt, and name tags will be provided to new members. New members are required to purchase black uniform boots and a flashlight holder. Boots must be polished at all times. Each member must have at least one full uniform available at all times. Any additional equipment not provided by the department must be authorized by the Chief of Police and purchased at the member’s expense. The staff will assist new members in obtaining all of the necessary equipment.
