Infusion Nurse Job Description (PRN)

Responsible for providing professional nursing care, as it directly relates to infusions, for patients including assessment, treatment, care planning, and medical care evaluation by following established standards and practices. Assists physicians and staff in coordinating patient care. Functions as primary liaison between patients, staff, and physicians.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Obtains patient consent for care and ensures patient confidentiality. Obtains and documents health history, information on chief complaint, vital signs, and health risk factors, and assesses disease condition. Provides patient care based on practice guidelines, standards of care, and federal/state laws and regulations.
• Executes prescribed treatments and medical interventions, administers prescribed medications, and monitors and documents treatment progress and patient response.
• Delegates as allowed under the Nurse Practice Act. Refers to/consults with physicians, other health providers, and community resources to prevent/resolve problems or concerns. Educates patients and families about health status, health maintenance, and management of acute and chronic conditions.
• Documents patient assessment and intervention data using established medical record forms/automated systems and documentation practices.
• Participates in multidisciplinary teams to improve patient care processes and outcomes. Tracks quality assurance data and monitors for acute and chronic care management.
• Maintains/reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examination results.
• Responds to/refers to incoming patient treatment-related phone calls.
• Maintains patient confidentiality & follows all HIPAA guidelines.
• Covers on floor if necessary to assist rooming patients and assume Medical Assistant job duties during moments of critical short staffing.
• Practice cost containment when using supplies.
• Submit all paperwork and/or documentation in a timely fashion.
• Clean and restock infusion room/exam rooms.
• Order infusion supplies
• Ensure all products kept and used have not expired and replace them when necessary.
• Act as a resource to other medical support staff when appropriate.
• Maintain licensure, certification, and other educational requirements as well as maintaining proficiency in technical skills and professional capabilities.
• Attend department and staff meetings; contribute suggestions/recommendations.
• Participate in OSHA Health and Safety Program. Failure to comply with the requirements of OSHA Safety Program would be addressed as any disciplinary action problem as discussed in the Employee Handbook.
• Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
• Assist with coordinating any office seasonal shots alongside other RN's at IMA.
• Maintain a neat and professional appearance as specified in the dress code policy.
• All other duties as requested.

Infusion:

• Mix medications for infusion based on prescribed standards set forth.
• Start and monitor IV medication with Remicade, Biologic, & all other Infusion patients.
• Assist the Billing Department with pre-authorizing infusions with the patient's insurance company, during moments of short staffing in the Billing Department.
• Schedule infusion appointments in the electronic EHR system.
• Frequently evaluate the quality assurance of patient care.

Secondary Job Duties - when covering on floor (but is not limited to):

• Rooming patients:
• Assist patients from the lobby to the designated exam room.
• Obtain a full set of vital signs including height and weight.
• Collect appropriate data regarding the patient's chief complaint.
• Prepare patient and chart by obtaining medical records, labs, radiological and other procedural reports for the physicians.
• Messages:
• Process patient phone calls in a timely fashion.
• Prioritize messages and callbacks in an appropriate manner.
• Obtain essential information regarding patient concerns and/or requests.
• Consult with physician and/or managers as appropriate.
• Document all information in the patient chart.
• Patient Care:
• Scheduled appointments and procedures.
• Scheduled medical procedures as needed, chaperones and assist with procedures (if needed).
• Educate patients regarding diet, blood pressure, self-injection, medication administration, etc. when authorized by the physician.
• Administer medications as ordered (PO, IM, SC, IV, and ID).

Experience: Minimum of one year of professional nursing experience, clinic experience preferred.

Requirements: Current state registered nurse license. Current CPR certificate.

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of professional nursing theory, regulations, and practices to give and evaluate patient care.
• Knowledge of nursing processes; health care systems, structure, and functions; and community resources. Understanding of health care technology, equipment, and supplies. Familiarity with state law on nursing care, nurse practice guidelines, and clinic policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of chart/medical record documentation requirements and federal/state laws related to the release of health care information.
• Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish/maintain a safe work environment.

Skills:

• Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care.
• Skill in time management, problem-solving, multitasking, prioritizing, and medical care coordination.
• Skill in initiating appropriate crisis interventions and emergency response.

Equipment Operated: Standard nursing equipment and supplies including thermometer and syringes. May involve use of assistive devices such as walkers, wheelchairs, pulse oximetry units, infusion pump BID cuff, and oxygen tanks. May require the use of a computer.

Work Environment: Varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient's manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 100 pounds (must be proficient in ergonomic transport of heavy boxes/packages. The employee will not be expected to lift 100 pounds alone and is expected to request help when situations arise of team lifts with heavy boxes, including boxes exceeding 50 pounds in weight). Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.

Mental/Physical Requirements: Combination of office and exam settings. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Manual dexterity for office machine operation including computer and calculator; stooping, bending to handle files and supplies, mobility to complete errands or deliveries, or sitting for extended periods of time. Stress can be triggered by multiple staff demands and deadlines. Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with an Infusion Nurse (RN) such as some walking, bending, and reaching. Repetitive use of computers may lead to nerve damage without ergonomic measures. Occasionally stress from dealing with patients with appointments and/or experience issues.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This employee must be available during the work hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Occasional overtime work may be required as job duties demand, per Supervisor authorization and direction. This
