The Maintenance Manager leads Isbell Construction’s shop and equipment maintenance operations, with responsibility for shop performance, vehicle and equipment readiness, maintenance quality, inventory controls, and the performance and development of shop personnel.

Working closely with Field Operations, Safety, and Isbell senior leadership, the Maintenance Manager establishes effective preventive and corrective maintenance practices, supports field needs, manages costs, and ensures equipment is properly inspected, repaired, documented, and returned to service.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Shop & Equipment Maintenance

1. Lead the daily operation of the shop, including work assignment, scheduling, workload prioritization, overtime authorization, and service follow-through.
2. Manage hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, performance management, and discipline for mechanics and shop personnel.
3. Maintain a clean, organized, professional shop with clear expectations for safety, quality, accountability, and productivity.
4. Provide hands-on maintenance support and technical guidance as operational needs require.
5. Manage preventive and corrective maintenance programs to promote equipment reliability, service quality, and cost-effective performance.
6. Oversee inspections, diagnostics, repairs, pre- and post-service activities, road calls, breakdown response, warranty recovery, tire and lubricant programs, and major component failures.
7. Monitor fleet condition, out-of-service units, repair status, and equipment availability, ensuring shop records align with current asset information.
8. Evaluate equipment performance and maintenance history to recommend repairs, modifications, replacement, or alternative service solutions.

Safety, Compliance & Documentation

1. Ensure shop and maintenance activities comply with company requirements and applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including DOT, OSHA, and EPA requirements.
2. Maintain complete and accurate maintenance records, including inspections, repair orders, parts usage, labor information, and asset data.
3. Identify recurring maintenance or reliability issues, conduct root-cause analysis, implement corrective actions, and escalate significant safety or equipment concerns.

Financial, Inventory & Vendor Management

1. Manage the shop and maintenance budget with a focus on labor efficiency, parts control, repair-versus-replace decisions, and overall fleet cost.
2. Maintain appropriate levels of parts, tools, supplies, and shop inventory to support operations while minimizing unnecessary stock and equipment downtime.
3. Monitor maintenance trends, road calls, breakdowns, repair activity, shop productivity, and safety performance to identify areas requiring attention.
4. Coordinate outside repair work, evaluate estimates, strengthen vendor performance, and negotiate service expectations to improve cost, quality, and turnaround time.
5. Support Isbell Construction’s equipment decommissioning and removal process in partnership with the centralized shop.

Operational Partnership & Continuous Improvement

1. Partner with field leadership to understand operational priorities and align maintenance schedules with crew and project needs.
2. Improve shop workflow, standard work practices, preventive maintenance compliance, equipment utilization, and service responsiveness.

Required

1. Progressive hands-on experience in fleet, equipment, transportation, or shop maintenance, including experience leading mechanics or shop personnel.
2. Working knowledge of preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, parts administration, fleet readiness, and equipment inspection practices.
3. Fluency in English and Spanish, with the ability to communicate effectively with employees, vendors, and maintenance technicians in both languages.
4. Working knowledge of applicable DOT, OSHA, EPA, and general workplace safety requirements.
5. Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritize work, manage resources, respond to urgent needs, and maintain service quality in a fast-paced operational environment.
6. Strong leadership, coaching, problem-solving, analytical, and written and verbal communication skills.
7. Ability to manage budgets, vendors, inventory, maintenance records, and performance reporting with accuracy and attention to detail.
8. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and fleet or maintenance management software.
9. Ability to collaborate effectively across Operations, Safety, Finance, Human Resources, and field leadership.
10. Valid driver's license required; CDL or relevant technical certifications are a plus.

Preferred

1. Ten or more years of progressive fleet or equipment maintenance experience; utility construction, transportation, heavy equipment, or field service experience strongly preferred.
2. Technical, trade school, or associate degree in diesel technology, automotive technology, equipment maintenance, or a related field.
3. Experience with fleet maintenance software, asset reporting, root-cause analysis, warranty recovery, and repair-versus-replace decision-making.
