Maintenance Worker I

There is currently one (1) vacancy for a Maintenance Worker I in the Public Works Department (Streets Division). A. PURPOSE: Under general supervision, performs a variety of maintenance and minor construction in the upkeep of the City's parks, streets and buildings; and performs related duties as required.

B. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Incumbents whose positions are allocated to this series are assigned duties in streets, parks and building maintenance work. Incumbents progress through this series based on time in grade, demonstrated proficiency and availability of budgeted slots at the next higher level. Due to the nature of construction and maintenance work, incumbents are expected to perform work at lower level classifications when there is insufficient work at their assigned level. Incumbents may be assigned work at a higher level for training purposes for limited periods of time.

Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry or junior level of craft apprenticeship. Incumbents may perform any, or any combination of, duties of the senior level class but are in a training capacity and, therefore, are held only to a moderate standard of proficiency.

C. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Streets Assignment: (1) Breaks, cuts, lays and finishes asphalt and concrete materials in the patching and repair of street, curbs and sidewalks; (2) removes damaged sidewalks, curbs and gutters, using cement saws, jack hammers and hand tools; (3) builds forms, pours and finishes concrete; (4) spreads asphalt screening, oil, gravel, sand and other surfacing materials; (5) loads and unloads street maintenance materials; (6) operates a variety of trucks and other street maintenance equipment; (7) drives a truck to haul materials for a variety of jobs; (8) assists with the trimming of trees; (9) installs or repairs street signs; (10) installs and moves traffic signs; (11) maintains the storm drain system and clears debris from culverts and ditches; (12) picks up sweeper dumps, garden refuse and other materials; (13) may operate heavier equipment used in maintenance and street repair; (14) performs heavy manual labor; (15) keeps tools and equipment in clean and safe working condition; (16) controls traffic in the vicinity of work projects; and trims, cuts down and removes trees and shrubs.

1. General and Specialized Job Knowledge and Abilities: (a) General Knowledge of: Arithmetic; English. (b) Specialized Knowledge of: Basic civil engineering techniques used in construction, maintenance and repair of streets, city parks and irrigation systems; construction drawings and blueprints; construction tools, equipment and materials; motor vehicle laws; operation of light to heavy equipment used in construction, repair and maintenance of streets and parks; safe working practices utilized in construction and maintenance; operation of light to moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment; principles of propagating and maintaining trees, shrubs, flowers and turf; tools, materials, procedures and equipment used in street and sidewalk maintenance and repair work.

(c) Ability to: Maintain City parks, roadways, traffic lights, storm drains, buildings and other City owned facilities; supervise, train and review the work of assigned personnel; maintain basic records and files; perform a variety of difficult and complex gardening, park, street and building maintenance work; read and interpret work plans and blueprints; perform activities requiring strength and agility; work at heights and in close quarters; operate moderately heavy power grounds, street repair and building maintenance equipment; perform heavy manual labor; follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; read and write at the level required for successful job performance.

2. Resources, Including Money, Equipment, Materials and Records: Trucks and equipment used in construction and maintenance; materials, plants and trees and supplies; and maintenance records.

3. Solving Problems: Emergency leaks and ruptures of irrigation pipes and broken sprinkler heads; devising methods to complete assignments and control vehicular traffic; mechanical and electrical problems; perform work in a safe and efficient manner.

6. Communications: (a) Oral: Instructions and conversations. (b) Written: Engineering drawings; blueprints; charts; handwritten diagrams and notes; installation location maps. (c) Visual: Hand signals; blueprints; drawings; observation of equipment and workers in the area. (d) Auditory: Noises denoting danger, or threat of danger from vehicular traffic; spoken instructions; signals and commands.

7. Safety: (a) Hazardous conditions: Heavy equipment; power tools; heavy materials; jagged edges; overhead and underground power lines; insects, snakes and rodents; caustic materials. (b) Frequency: Daily. (c) Consequence: From minor injury such as scrapes, contusions, burns and abrasions up to and including permanent disability or death.

10. Application of Mental and Physical Effort: Requires heavy physical labor and the ability to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled crafts; ability to concentrate for extended periods while perform skilled crafts and maintain a constant awareness of safety hazards and potential danger.

E. PREREQUISITES: Experience: One (1) year of experience performing maintenance work, extensive physical labor, or related qualifying experience. Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED. 2. Licenses, Registrations, Accreditation, etc.: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License. Possession of a Class B license is highly desirable.
