Summary
The Engineering and Investment Manager is responsible for ensuring that plant assets, engineering systems, and capital investments support safe, reliable, and cost‐effective operations. This role provides leadership over engineering resources, evaluates and implements new and emerging technologies, and leads capital planning to support the plant’s short‐ and long‐term business objectives. The position drives continuous improvement across safety, quality, reliability, environmental performance, and cost through disciplined engineering and investment execution.
Essential Job Functions
· Provide overall leadership and direction for plant engineering activities, including mechanical, electrical, controls, automation, and utility systems.
· Directly supervise, coach, and develop engineers and technical staff, ensuring safe work practices and professional growth.
· Ensure engineering designs, installations, and modifications comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., NEC, NFPA, OSHA, EPA, ISO).
· Lead and support process improvement initiatives aligned with annual operating plans and long‐term business strategy.
· Assess plant assets relative to lifecycle condition, capability, and reliability; recommend upgrades, replacements, or new technologies as needed.
· Evaluate and recommend new or developing technologies to improve safety, quality, cost, energy efficiency, environmental footprint, and operational performance.
· Develop and support preventive and predictive maintenance strategies in coordination with maintenance leadership.
· Assist in the development and execution of annual and five‐year capital expenditure plans in support of plant sustainability and growth objectives.
· Manage capital projects from concept through commissioning, ensuring projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and sustainably implemented.
· Prepare engineering specifications, scopes of work, and bid packages; evaluate contractor and supplier proposals.
· Ensure engineering resources are effectively allocated and that assigned projects meet schedule, cost, and performance expectations.
· Develop and maintain training programs for new and existing engineering personnel.
· Partner with all other departments to support cross‐functional objectives.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position is responsible for direct and indirect supervision of employees within the Engineering team, as well as oversight of departmental activities and resources.
Minimum Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls, Automation, or a related engineering discipline.
· Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive engineering experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
· Prior experience in an engineering leadership or management role.
· Experience managing capital projects and capital expenditure budgets in a heavy manufacturing setting.
· Strong working knowledge of manufacturing equipment, process systems, and industrial reliability principles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills.
· Broad engineering knowledge across mechanical, electrical, automation, and process control systems.
· Knowledge of industrial safety, environmental, and quality requirements applicable to aluminum or metal manufacturing.
· Ability to develop engineering specifications, manage contractors, and facilitate competitive bidding processes.
· Proficiency with project management tools and standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
· Working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar drafting software with ability to review and revise drawings.
· Strong troubleshooting, root‐cause analysis, and problem‐solving skills related to process and equipment performance.
· Solid understanding of reliability fundamentals, preventive and predictive maintenance concepts.
· Strong financial acumen, including capital justification, cost analysis, and return‐on‐investment evaluation.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact at all organizational levels.
· Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Working Conditions
The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to safely and successfully perform the essential functions of this job consistent with federal, state, and local standards, including meeting productivity standards.
· Regular standing, walking, bending, and reaching throughout the shift
- Occasional below waist level work, climbing, carrying, reaching over or away from the body, reaching above the shoulder, push/pull, and lifting up to 35 lbs
· Interaction with employees, contractors, and visitors throughout the facility
· Combination of office, plant floor, and meeting‐based work
· Exposure to industrial conditions such as noise, dust, temperature variations, and moving equipment is common as well as the need to work at heights
