Principal Development Engineer - Sustainable Infrastructure

Overview Under general direction, you will lead the Development Team, driving departmental and project objectives on large, bundled sustainability infrastructure projects. You will perform high‑level analysis, promote project quality and innovation, and partner with customers to achieve business goals through the Solutions Playbook and Best Business Practices methodology. Responsibilities Provide technical, process, or financial support to the Sales team during the design process and help develop the customer business case for conceptual solutions. Lead preliminary data collection, auditing, and modeling efforts, support detailed development of projects, validate design assumptions, and build detailed development budgets and schedules. Collaborate with operations and outside partners to develop project estimates, scopes of work, energy‑savings and financial models (ROI), and prepare proposals and customer communication documents. Understand the full range of JCI offerings and devise multiple solutions to meet specific program requirements identified by the Solutions Design Specialist. Lead cross‑functional teams in developing multiple components of bundled sales. Perform detailed engineering or financial analysis to quantify project cost, savings, and other customer benefits; assist in technical or financial benchmarking and develop customer baselines. Provide peer reviews of the design for complex project bundles and advanced solutions, covering system design, scope development, engineering calculations, guide specifications, plant performance values, cost estimation, risk assessment, and code/regulatory conformance plans. Assess design risk and be accountable for all elements of large complex projects, especially project risk reviews and contract reviews that include measured energy savings calculations, non‑measured benefits, baseline energy consumption, construction schedules, and cost estimates. Present to technical buyers and assist in presentations to economic buyers or C‑level clients. Participate in transition meetings with Operations to ensure scope, objectives, timelines, and customer requirements are understood. Create and manage budgets, timelines, and quality of assigned opportunities. Use document management tools and standard JCI development processes to perform tasks. Mentor others to maintain high‑quality workflow and compliance. Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, vendors, and customer facility technical managers. Stay current with relevant engineering or design standards and practices. Provide post‑contract design review support. Actively participate in relevant professional organizations, taking on leadership roles. Maintain relevant professional certifications and licenses (e.g., Professional Engineering license). Promote and adhere to JCI safety policies. Apply strong understanding of performance contracting regulations, legislative and business environments, and procurement requirements. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering. Minimum of ten years’ experience designing or selling building systems, HVAC, energy modeling, construction, or facility management. Experience in building modeling preferred; CEM certification required; Professional Engineering (P.E.) or LEED AP preferred. Demonstrated vertical market expertise. Strong analytical capabilities and ability to manage tasks associated with development of projects. Fully competent in analysis and assessment of facility systems. Ability to lead engineering teams, work effectively with others, drive results, focus on the customer, and act ethically. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and comfort in customer‑facing situations. Subject‑matter expertise in a specific specialty or line‑of‑business area. Solid computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, Project, EQuest, and benchmarking tools. Ability to review contract and subcontract schedules. Compensation HIRING SALARY RANGE: $112,100 - $168,400. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
