Correctional Nurse

POSITION SUMMARY

This position provides direct nursing care, treatment, and rehabilitation to inmate patients; assists physicians as directed. Also includes addressing the needs of those suffering from SUD- Substance Use Disorder and MOUD-Medications for Opioid Use Disorder. Takes independent action within professional and legal limits and performs related nursing duties as assigned; trains correctional staff as necessary.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or allinclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.

1. Creates and maintains individual inmate medical folders.
2. Ensures inmate access to health care staff and services.
3. Review medical intake screening for new admissions.
4. Administers routine and PRN medications according to the nursing standards of care. Understands medication uses, side effects and food-drug interactions.
5. When necessary, makes referrals of inmates to the staff physician, dentist, or mental health professional.
6. Assesses signs and symptoms indicating physiologic and psychosocial changes in the patient's condition.
7. Responsible for communicating information to work with case management, therapist and other medical staff to provide improved service for SUD (Substance Use Disorder /MOUD (Medication for Opioid Use Disorder) specific cases.
8. Monitors and treats patients who have a co-occurring substance use/psychiatric illness.
9. Collects inmate blood and urine samples as necessary.
10. Determines the need for emergency hospital care and ensures that all medication is administered in accordance with standard operating procedures and as ordered by the authorizing authority.
11. Documents the patient's plan of care using identified nursing diagnoses, expected patient outcomes, and selected nursing interventions.
12. Provides for the training of all Correctional Officers regarding medical duties, responsibilities and obligations, including, but not limited to, HIV awareness, medication disbursement, and initial medical intake screening.
13. Reviews activities of Correctional Officers to assure that standing orders are followed correctly and in a timely fashion.
14. Reports in writing to his/her immediate supervisor all matters of misconduct, incompetence, neglect of duty or violation of the rules and regulations on the part of any member under his/her command.
15. Plans and participates in management conferences to assure the administrative staff are informed of the present status of all pertinent departmental operations; discusses and seeks recommendations on problems or proposed policies; explains policies and outlines programs.
16. Ensures adherence to various regulatory guidelines.
17. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of the principles, standards, practices, and techniques of professional and public health nursing.
• Knowledge of the inherent dangers and precautions to be taken in using drugs and other medication.
• Knowledge of treatment, assessment, immunization, and related medical services for service recipients in area of assignment.
• Knowledge of local and State rules, regulations, procedures, and policies pertaining to nursing services.
• Ability to effectively assess consumer's medical needs and their ability to make medical decisions and document accordingly.
• Knowledge of PPE and its proper use for personal safety measures.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical information and assure rights and privacy are protected at all times per HIPAA.
• Ability to accurately maintain medical records and prepare reports.
• Knowledge of electronic records systems.
• Knowledge of laws and regulations that affect the delivery of services provided by the Department.
• Knowledge of Wisconsin Statutes and ongoing statutory changes, procedural changes, and form changes.
• Knowledge of computer software and systems consistent for this position.
• Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.
• Skill in active listening, non-judgmental communication, safety planning and collaborative problem solving.
• Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.

• Knowledge and ability to follow the policies and practices contained in the County Personnel Handbook.
• Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and respond after hours if needed.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing.
• Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Wisconsin.
• Must successfully pass caregiver and criminal background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing.
• Two (2) years of work experience in correctional health care.
